SOAs one of the earliest and most innovative creators of truly abstract painting, Piet Mondrian is not only a cornerstone figure of modern art, but also among the great Dutch masters. And ‘Composition No. II’ is one of his most daring and rare compositions.
Painted in 1930 and possessing the balance and harmony of Mondrian’s signature style, ‘Composition No. II’ represents the pinnacle of Mondrian’s maturity as an artist. Mondrian works that have a predominance of the color red—such as the striking large red square in the upper right corner seen here—are exceptionally rare within his oeuvre, with only 17 paintings of the nearly 120 works executed by the artist from 1921 to 1933 having a focus on the color.
Of this preciously-limited group of red-dominant works, only three paintings remain in private hands. Staring in our #SothebysNewYork Modern Evening Auction presented by @samsung, ‘Composition No. II’ is anticipated to be among the most important and valuable works by the artist ever offered at auction when it goes under the hammer on 14 November.
