THMost people SHOULDN’T own a monitor lizard
This is the reason I don’t own a truly large monitor species, like the asian water monitor.
They need a zoo-like enclosure to live a good life, so once I can provide that I’m going to get a black throat monitor 😈
I know most people keep them in 8ft-12ft long enclosures, which is huge, but I can’t imagine keeping one in something like that their whole life
And I know care for reptiles is always changing, over 10 years ago I used to keep a leopard gecko in a 10 gallon because that’s what everyone recommended. So maybe in the future people will realize that a commercial enclosure is way too small for adult monitors
Realistically, there’s no good way to justifying keeping 6ft long animals in 8ft long enclosures

MAControversial Opinion: Many captive monitor lizards suffer from obesity due to over feeding or feeding the wrong diet. Over feeding happens without you even noticing. If you have a “feeding schedule” you may be over feeding your animal to the point of obesity decreasing the life expectancy of your monitor lizard. In the wild there is no “feeding schedule” in fact many monitors (especially large species) have to go days if not weeks without food in the wild. That’s why I recommend feeding based on body condition! I check Buggy the Crocodile Monitor Lizard every Tuesday & Saturday & look at the body condition. I look at his hips, back legs & tail. You want a monitor to have a decently thick tail. Not a round one. The stomach right above the hips should be a little indented (means the stomach is empty). His hips should not be visible! This creates the strongest & most bad a$$ Monitor Lizards 🦎
