SCI’ve driven California State Route 1 through Big Sur more times than I can count, but it never feels the same twice. This time we started in Monterey County and let Highway 1 set the pace — which is always the right move.
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is the perfect first stop: turquoise water, rocky coves, and coastal trails that make you forget the world outside the cliffs. As you wind south, Pfeiffer Beach will stop you in your tracks — the famous pink sand and Keyhole Rock glow like nothing else along the coast. In spring, the hike to Calla Lily Valley is a must, where swaths of delicate white calla lilies spill across the valley like nature’s own carpet. And a short drive further, McWay Falls delivers that cinematic wow factor: an 80-foot waterfall dropping straight onto the beach.
If you’re splurging, a stay at Alila Ventana Big Sur turns the drive into something unforgettable, perched above the cliffs with sweeping ocean views.
Even when you think you know this stretch of Highway 1, it still finds ways to surprise you .

WAPrettiest beach town in California🩷😍
Carmel-by-the-Sea is renowned for its fairytale-like village charm🧚♀️. The downtown is filled with pretty boutique stores, passageways and courtyards, each one different, and many are lined with unique shops, galleries, and restaurants in the cottage style buildings 🏛️
I suggest walking the whole downtown upto the Carmel Beach. You can also shop unique things from the stores or you can sit down to have some food there 🔏🖋️
The Downtown is also peppered with 41. There are over 40 secret passageways in Carmel-by-the-Sea, each with its own unique charm. They are a great way to explore the town and discover hidden gems🩷
Caramel-by-the-sea’s fairytale houses are residential buildings, so beautiful respectful when you visit. It is a self guided tour just a block outside the downtown 🏡
