I thought moving to Australia would be amazing… then I discovered what no one warns you about: 1. High cost of living - even decent salaries don’t make life easy. 2. Housing is insane - renting or buying is tougher than it looks. 3. Work culture can feel like a trap - sponsorships, long hours, bureaucracy. 4. Friendships take time -not everyone you meet will stick around. 5. Lifestyle vs reality - beaches and bars don’t pay the bills. 6. Travel isn’t always easy - long distances, expensive flights, hidden rules. 7. Expectations vs reality - the “dream life” isn’t automatic, it needs strategy. Save this if you’re thinking about moving abroad and share it with anyone dreaming of Australia. _ #LivingAbroad #AustraliaReality #ExpatLife #MovingToAustralia #TravelTruth

One week ago we moved to Australia from the Netherlands. Here’s my honest comparison. 🇳🇱 vs 🇦🇺 1. The “hi” situation. In the Netherlands we say hi to everyone. Shop. Lift. Hotel. Strangers in your village. It’s just normal. Here I walk in, smile, say hi. Crickets. Complete silence. Is it just me or is this a thing? 😅 2. The housing situation. In the Netherlands everyone complains it’s overcrowded. No houses. No space. Perth is massive. Empty roads. Space everywhere. And still. Not many houses available. Same problem. Better weather. 🏠 3. The food situation. Netherlands: we cook every day. Or minimum broodje kaas (bread with cheese). Australia: ready meals everywhere. Cheap restaurants. Asian food for $12. Snacks I’ve never seen in my life. Haven’t cooked once this week. Zero guilt. This might be my favourite thing. 🍜 4. The bike situation. We are Dutch. We assumed we would just cycle. Both work in CBD. Seemed logical. Arrived. 38 degrees. No bike lanes. We drive now. We take the bus. Someone please tell me there’s somewhere nice to bike here. 🚲😢 5. The crowds situation. Went to the zoo on a public holiday. Said “wow it’s so empty.” Heard Australians next to us saying “it’s so crowded today.” We said nothing. Also the beach. Empty. On a weekend. In summer. In the Netherlands this beach would have three million people and someone’s elbow in your face. 🏖️ One week in. Miss my bike. Don’t miss the rain. 🇳🇱 → 🇦🇺 Curious, will my opinion on any of these change in 3 months? I’ll report back. 👀 Perth locals, what am I missing? 👇 #perthisok #australia #netherlands #relocation #movingtoaustralia

5 things I’m learning after moving to Western Australia 🇦🇺 🔸 Life happens outside. Parks, beaches, night markets, kids everywhere, events all the time. You don’t “plan” to go out — you just do. Sun, space and fresh air are part of daily life. 🔸 WA is insanely beautiful (and those sunsets…). The ocean, the light, the open spaces — and the sunsets are something else. We loved Queensland, but we genuinely missed this part. Here, sunsets actually stop you in your tracks. 🔸 Food quality is on another level. Fresh produce, great cafés, simple food done properly. You can taste the difference when things don’t need to travel halfway across the world to reach your plate. 🔸 Everyone complains about the cost of living here… but perspective matters. I hear it all the time in WA: housing, groceries, prices. Probably a bit spoiled 😅 Anyone who’s spent time recently in QLD, NSW or VIC knows WA is still playing a different game. 🔸 Compared to Italy, the biggest change is time and balance. In Italy you live well, but you’re always adapting, juggling, making things work. Here the days start earlier, life feels simpler, and you actually feel like you use your time better — especially with kids. You miss people. You don’t really miss the lifestyle you left. Once WA gets under your skin, it’s hard to let go. We love the sunshine story. But financially? This move takes strategy. Too many families arrive underprepared, stressed and scrambling. Australia rewards the prepared. Not the hopeful. If you’re planning to move, have you actually calculated the full first 6 months cost? 💰 Double rent while you wait 💰 Car deposits 💰 School uniforms & book packs 💰 Furniture 💰 Bond + 4 weeks rent upfront 💰 Slower income at the start And here’s the part people don’t say: If you don’t have a financial cushion, the first 6 months can be brutal. The dream is possible. But planning beats blind optimism. #movingtoaustralia #relocating #familymove #lifereset #savingtotravel

💸 how expensive everyday life actually is Before moving you hear about high salaries. What people mention less is how much basic life costs. Rent, groceries, services, insurance. You quickly learn that Australia is comfortable, but definitely not cheap. 🌏 how far Australia is from everything You don’t realise it until you move. Visiting Europe, the US or even parts of Asia suddenly becomes a serious trip. Australia is beautiful, but it also feels like living on a very distant island. 🛂 how slow and complicated immigration can be People talk about beaches and lifestyle. What they rarely mention is the years of visas, paperwork, waiting and uncertainty many migrants go through before they can finally feel settled. #australia #movingtoaustralia #lifeinaustralia #australianmigrant

Life in Australia hits different 🇦🇺✨ Calling everyone “mate” — Your friend is mate. The cashier is mate. The taxi driver is mate. Sometimes even the person arguing with you is… mate 😄 Coffee isn’t just a drink here, it’s a standard ☕ One bad cup and the café is instantly judged 👀 Wildlife? Totally normal 🦘🕷️ “Kangaroo on the road.” “Spider in the bathroom.” Australians: yeah, that happens. Early mornings are a lifestyle 🌅 5–6 AM = surfing, running, Pilates… and cafés already buzzing with people And “How are you?” It’s not a question… it’s just hello 🤍 #AustraliaLife #MovingToAustralia #LifeInAustralia #AustralianCulture #AussieLife LivingAbroad DesiInAustralia Explore FYP

This might be controversial… but I’d think twice about moving to Australia on a 482 visa again. Before I begin to explain, I completely appreciate that it’s a luxury or have had this opportunity and I am still really grateful for it but there have been challenges that I wish I’d known more about before making the decision. First thing is childcare costs. It’s so expensive. For my youngest I’m paying over $600 a week for 3 days which still shocks me when I actually say it out loud. Being stuck to one employer is also really restricting. You don’t have the same flexibility and sometimes you just have to accept terms because your visa is tied to it, which can feel quite uncomfortable at times. Then there’s the PR processing time. You’re just waiting and trying to plan your life but not really knowing what’s going to happen. You’re living here, building a life, making friends, settling your kids, but there’s always that doubt in the background about whether it’s actually permanent. Buying a house is another one. Everything feels harder to plan financially, especially when income can feel limited by a sponsoring employer and childcare costs are so high. We’re honestly not in a position to buy for a while because of that which is tough when you’re trying to properly settle somewhere. Don’t get me wrong, moving here is still the best thing we’ve done. But being on a 482 comes with a pressure and uncertainty I don’t think people fully realise. Anyone else feel like this? #australiavisa #movingtoaustralia #482visa #movetoaustralia #lifeinaustralia

I thought I was well prepared but .. 👇 within 48 hours, I was lost 💀 Stores closed at 5pm when I needed groceries. Medicine cost me $80 (would’ve been $5 back home). I applied to 20 part time jobs online... got 2 replies. Nobody tells you the REAL survival tips. So here are 15 things I learned the hard way: 🚗 Transport rules differ by state (NSW ≠ VIC) 💊 Bring your medicines - they’re expensive here 💼 Walk into cafes with your resume (this actually works) 🛒 Shops close EARLY - stock up on weekends 🌦️ Pack for all seasons... in one day 🗣️ “Arvo” = afternoon (you’ll use this daily) 💸 Budget weekly, not monthly - it adds up FAST 🛂 Know your visa work limits (don’t risk it) 🏉 Pretend to care about AFL - instant friends 🌐 Join Facebook groups BEFORE you land ☕ Find your local hangout spot early 🙏 Manners matter - “cheers mate” goes far 📅 Doctor appointments take DAYS (plan ahead) 💪 Some people will test you - stay confident 🎉 Free events > expensive tourist traps Already in Australia? What would you add? 👇 Moving soon? Save this - you’ll need it. #AustraliaLife #MovingToAustralia #StudyInAustralia #InternationalStudent #australia 🔍 Topics: Student life Australia | Part time jobs Australia | Australia work visa | First week in Australia | International student survival

🇦🇺 Moving to Australia? (READ CAPTION FOR BONUS TIPS) Save this Checklist! ✈️📝 The Big 5 (Do these IMMEDIATELY!): 1️⃣ Get a SIM Card & Local Number: Hit the airport kiosks or a local store. You’ll need a local number for maps, banking OTPs, and job calls! 📱 2️⃣ Open a Bank Account: Most “Big Four” banks let you open one with just your passport. You’ll need this to receive your first paycheck! 💳 3️⃣ Grab a Myki Card: (Or Opal/Go Card). Public transport is your daily companion. Pro tip: Student concessions save a lot! 🚃 4️⃣ Apply for a TFN (Tax File Number): Do this online the moment you have an address. You can’t legally work without it! 💼 5️⃣ Setup myGov Account: This is your “master key” for the ATO, Medicare, and all government services. 🔑 ✨ Bonus Tips for a Smooth Transition: • Apply for a Proof of Age Card: Stop carrying your passport to bars or events! It’s safer and widely accepted. 🆔 • Fix your Resume: Adapt it to Australian standards (keep it simple, no photos). 📄 • Start the Part-Time Job Hunt: Retail, hospitality, or warehouses—local experience matters! ☕️ • Learn Local Etiquette: From queuing to “no worries,” small things make a big impact. 🤝 • Give Yourself “Settle Time”: Culture shock is real. Be kind to yourself while you adjust. ❤️ Follow @buildwithwahi for more tips! 🚀 [Australia Immigration, Moving to Melbourne, International Student Life, First week in Australia, TFN Application, Australian Bank Account, Myki Card, Settling in Australia, New Immigrant Tips, Australia 2026] #australia #melbourne #internationalstudents #movingtoaustralia #australialife

When we moved our family from the U.S. to Australia, I thought finding a rental would feel pretty similar. It didn’t. 😅 We made 4 trips to the Central Coast and inspected 10 homes before finding ours. Things that surprised us most: • Open inspections with SO many people looking with you vs private inspections in the U.S. • Sometimes the current tenants are still home while you walk through • Rent is listed per week instead of per month • Applying for homes before you even know if you’ll get it (the competition is no joke) • Submitting what feels like your entire life story in the application Our hot takes: 1. To help stand out, add a little family “CV” with photos of your previous home & a little about your family to your application 2. If you’re doing inspections with kids: snackle boxes, travel activity bags, and a stop at @westfieldaustralia between houses can save the day 3. Prep and upload# these documents before you move to be able to sumbit asap: * govt ID (passport or license) * proof of income (3 payslips, but for us my husbands work contract was accepted as he did not have a AUS payslip yet) * centerlink statements * bank, pension, or other income statements * If you’ve ever owned a property, council rates notice or sales contract Saving this would have helped us, so I hope it helps you! #movingtoaustralia #australiarental #rentinginaustralia #housinginaustralia
