A better museum visit might fit in your pocket. Some museum visits just… happen. You walk through the galleries. You look at a few things. You leave. But every once in a while, something different happens. A moment of surprise. A question that sparks a conversation. A detail you can’t stop thinking about. Those are the magical museum moments. I made this little pocket guide to help you find more of them — whether you're visiting with kids, friends, or just wandering on your own. ✨ Grab your free Best Museum Visit Ever pocket guide at the link in bio. Because the best museum visits aren’t about knowing more. They’re about noticing more.

Okay I know this is a HOT take, but hear me out. As a museum educator and museum enthusiast, I’ve been to hundreds of museums over the course of my life, and I LOVE a museum gift shop. But my hot take is that I can tell if a museum is worth my time by looking at its gift shop. I would say 97% of museums I’ve been to (of course there are always exceptions) are mirrored by their gift shop. And their museum gift shop is usually at the front entrance, so I can tell almost immediately how I’m going to feel about museums. I look at a few things to know: ➳ Are there things for all ages and all price points? ➳ Selection of books - this is KEY here. Books for all ages shows a care and awareness of audiences. Also, what type of books do you have? It shouldn’t just be dense historical knowledge. Also, if you’re a site that deals with “difficult” (don’t get me started on that word) history, is that reflected in your book selection? ➳ Local artists/vendors - this shows me how connected to the community they are ➳ Representation across collections - if you have a Van Gogh, that’s great, but there shouldn’t just be Van Gogh options. ➳ Creativity - again, shows the care and intentionality taken by the museum and gift shop staff. I don’t want just generic things. Now, I, of course, scale my expectations based on the size and resources of the museum, but just because you’re not the MET doesn’t mean you can’t have an amazing gift shop. In fact, some of the best gift shops I’ve seen have been at small museums. • • • #girlsinmuseums #museumgram #museumgiftshop #museumvisit #historygirls
