Why would someone deliberately cut the face of a Roman Empress off a coin nearly 2000 years ago? 🧐 Would you believe it, we only have 10 Fridays left until we are back at Bridge Farm for our 2026 excavations! We thought that would be a wonderful time to do a ten week countdown to showcase to you some of our wonderful finds! This week, supervisor Blake shows us two Roman coins which tell the unique story of a Roman Empress. Why do you think someone cut the coin? Could it be related to ‘damnatio memoriae’? Or was it something else? Let us know what you think below! 🪙 For those interested, head to the ‘How to Join’ page on our website (culverproject.co.uk) to find out how you can volunteer with us this year and help us uncover more wonderful stories like this! #archaeology #archaeologylovers #archaeologist #archaeological #archaeologicalsite

In Pompeii, archaeologists uncovered two individuals inside a house, preserved beneath layers of volcanic material from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Alongside the remains, small personal items were found, including coins held in one hand and gold earrings with pearls still in place. These objects provide insight into actions taken in the final stages of the event. The coins may have been gathered quickly, possibly representing portable wealth or resources. The earrings, still worn, reflect everyday adornment that remained with the individual at the time. The eruption developed in phases. It began with falling pumice and ash, which accumulated across the city. Later, fast-moving flows of hot gas and material moved through streets and buildings, affecting those who had not already left the area or found shelter. Finds like this are important because they connect large historical events with individual experiences. Rather than only showing structures or city layout, they highlight how people responded in moments of urgency, including decisions about what to carry or keep. Pompeii continues to be one of the most studied archaeological sites from the Roman period. Ongoing excavations reveal not only architecture and art, but also small details that help reconstruct daily life and sudden events within the city. In Milton, Cambridgeshire, archaeologists uncovered the working area of a Roman villa farm during the construction of a new police station. The site dates to the 4th century AD. Archaeologists found over 5,000 animal bones, mostly cattle, along with bone combs, jewellery, tableware, and evidence of bone and antler working. They also discovered a ceramic cheese strainer, suggesting milk was processed into cheese on the farm. The farm stood near the Roman road Akeman Street and the River Cam, making it easy to transport food to nearby towns. More unusual finds included the skeleton of a large dog and the burial of three infants, possibly triplets. The farm was abandoned around AD 400, as Roman Britain began to collapse. Today, the site is home to… a police station. The discovery was recently featured in @current_archaeology, following the publication of the excavation report by @archaeologicalresearchservices

In Pompeii, archaeologists discovered the remains of two individuals inside a house, preserved beneath layers of volcanic material from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Near the remains, small personal belongings were found, including coins held in one hand and gold earrings with pearls still in place. These objects help researchers understand what people did in the final moments of the disaster. The coins appear to have been gathered quickly, possibly as portable wealth or emergency resources. The earrings, still being worn, show that the individual was dressed as usual and likely did not expect how quickly the situation would worsen. The eruption happened in stages. It began with pumice stones and ash falling across the city, gradually covering streets and buildings. Later, fast-moving surges of extremely hot gas, ash, and debris rushed through the city, impacting those who had not already escaped or found safe shelter. Discoveries like this are important because they connect major historical events with real human experiences. Instead of only showing buildings and city layout, these findings reveal how individuals reacted in moments of fear and urgency—what they chose to carry, what they left behind, and how suddenly their lives changed. Pompeii remains one of the most studied archaeological sites from the Roman world. Ongoing excavations continue to uncover not only architecture and artwork, but also small personal details that help historians reconstruct daily life and the sudden tragedy that struck the city in A.D. 79.

Bronze Age 1: A 3000 year old burial mound! Built over 3,000 years ago, entire communities had to work together to gather enough earth and turf to construct it. These mounds marked the territory of the elite, who were buried with valuable gifts like bronze weapons and jewelry. Because people back then reused and expanded these sites over generations, archaeologists believe there are likely still untouched graves hidden inside. #archeology #archaeology #history #nature #grave

My favourite corner of Pompeii. The park have done a wonderful job excavating, roofing and protecting the Casti Amanti block of the city. There are fancy dwellings packed in with more modest houses. Among the maze of rooms and little open spaces are some childish scrawls on a wall. #history #archeology #romans
