Despite its name, the electric eel is not a true eel but a type of knifefish native to the slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and swamps of the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. An adult electric eel can grow up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) in length and weigh more than 20 kilograms, making it one of the largest electric-producing animals on Earth. Around 80% of its body is made up of specialized electric organs—the Main organ, Hunter’s organ, and Sachs’ organ—each packed with thousands of electrocytes. These cells act like tiny biological batteries, stacking their voltage to generate discharges of up to 860 volts, strong enough to stun prey or deter large predators. Electric eels use low-voltage pulses to sense their environment, a system called electrolocation, which allows them to “see” in murky, dark water where visibility is poor. When hunting, they unleash high-voltage shocks to instantly paralyze fish, amphibians, or small mammals.
