i figured it out! just goes to show how simple goofs can screw up your experiments lol i’ve noticed that sometimes a converter or PHY setup will require a physical wire cross because the PHY isn’t doing auto-polarity swapping, & sometimes it doesn’t. just depends on the device & its PHY settings. luckily this was an easy fix! i know ive been showing off a bunch of expensive testers lately so here are some available cheaper ones for various purposes: - Klein Scout Pro series (wiremap, length, tone & trace) - Noyafa testers - Pocketethernet - Netool.io (app-based) - Fluke MicroScanner - literally just iperf on PC or server #networkengineer #ccna #homelab #womenintech #ethernet

Packet Tracer 💻 A virtual network simulator used to practice configurations. Pros: • Free and beginner-friendly • Build large topologies quickly • Perfect for CCNA practice • Easy to reset and test scenarios Cons: ❌ Not real hardware ❌ Some features are limited Physical Home Lab 🖥️ Real routers, switches, and cables. Pros: • Hands-on hardware experience • Learn cabling and device behavior • More realistic environments Cons: ❌ Expensive ❌ Takes space ❌ Harder to scale networks Best strategy 👇 Start with Packet Tracer to learn concepts, then move to physical labs later for deeper experience. What is a NOC? If you’re new to IT, or looking to get into the industry, this is fundamental to understand. NOC stands for Network Operations Center, and you can think of it like mission control for your network. They monitor everything - your sites, circuits, firewalls, and cloud environments. When something breaks - whether it’s a a fiber cut, a server crash, a downed site... the NOC is the first to know. They open tickets, escalate issues, and sometimes even fix problems before users notice anything’s wrong. Some NOCs separate their roles into two tiers: -Tier 1 handles basic troubleshooting and monitoring. -Tier 2 steps in for deeper technical fixes or escalation to engineering teams.�Add a comment... The whole point of the NOC is to catch problems early, fix them fast, and keep your network running - even when sh*t hits the fan.
