Follow @asianriches for more insights like this. Singapore is considering tougher penalties for scam-related crimes, including mandatory caning alongside jail time and fines. Sim Ann said the proposed framework aims to strengthen deterrence as scam losses rise and victims face significant financial and emotional harm. Authorities say stricter enforcement sends a clear signal that fraud will not be tolerated, reflecting Singapore’s broader emphasis on order, accountability, and public safety. #SingaporeLaw #AntiScam #PublicPolicy #RuleOfLaw #AsianWealth

Is it time to adjust the income tax threshold? The exemption of the first S$20,000 of chargeable income has remained unchanged since 2002, leading to “bracket creep” as more lower- and middle-income earners enter the tax base, said Bishan-Toa Payoh MP Saktiandi Supaat during the Budget debate in parliament on Tuesday (Feb 24). “The case here is not for tax cuts. It’s for calibration,” he added, suggesting a possible adjustment to S$25,000 or S$30,000. #sgnews #singapore

The Government regularly reviews the effectiveness of financial assistance schemes and has progressively enhanced the Assurance Package (AP) in response to high inflationary pressures over the years, says Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Finance Shawn Huang in Parliament on 3 March. He was responding to a question raised by Member of Parliament (MP) for Jurong East-Bukit Batok Group Representation Constituency (GRC) Lee Hong Chuang on whether giving out Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers to every Singaporean household, regardless of socioeconomic status, has resulted in a worsening cost of living due to demand-pull inflation. Mr Huang said that the Government also provides substantial structural support to help Singaporeans manage major cost-of-living concerns such as education, healthcare, housing, and retirement, along with targeted structural support for vulnerable groups. “When necessary, we will complement these structural measures with one-off additional support for households,” he added.
