Bathing Ape is a Japanese fashion brand founded by Nigo in Ura-Harajuku in 1993. Pharrell was instrumental in bringing the brand to the U.S. and hip-hop but Soulja Boy took BAPE to another level with younger, mainstream audiences by wearing the sneakers in the Crank Dat video and releasing this track with Arab. Soulja and Arab are seen beating up a pair of Jordans in the video and trade bars dissing Nike, specifically Air Force Ones in Arab’s verse. Nike would again be on the receiving end of a diss track in 2016 when Kanye West released Facts.

One month to go until NIGO: From Japan with Love opens at the Design Museum 🕶 This landmark show is the world’s first retrospective of @nigo - one of the earliest creatives to bridge streetwear and luxury fashion. A founding figure in ‘street culture’, NIGO has shaped some of the world’s most recognisable brands and built his own influential labels. Across a 30-year career, he has helped define contemporary fashion, working across music, architecture and interior design. Drawing on influences from vintage Americana and hip-hop to traditional Japanese craft and 1980s Tokyo, the exhibition brings together over 700 objects - including a recreation of NIGO’s teenage bedroom, rare designs, hand-thrown ceramics and a life-size glass tea house.
