Get Lucky is one of those tracks that instantly brings you back; summer nights, windows down, radio turned up, no worries for a few minutes. It’s pure nostalgia, but it also just holds up as an unbelievably well-made song. Daft Punk were coming off years of being known for heavy electronic music, and instead of chasing trends, they went the opposite direction. Random Access Memories was all about bringing real musicians back into the spotlight, live instruments, analog recording, no shortcuts. That’s where Nile Rodgers comes in. His guitar riff on this song is the backbone of everything. Simple, clean, funky, and instantly recognizable. It’s one of those riffs that feels like it’s always existed. Then there’s Pharrell. His vocal performance is effortless, smooth, and timeless. He doesn’t over-sing, he doesn’t try to steal the spotlight, he just locks into the groove and lets the song breathe. The chemistry between all of them feels natural, not forced, which is rare for a collaboration this big. When Get Lucky dropped, it was everywhere. And instead of burning out, it became one of those songs people never really get tired of. It won Grammys, topped charts around the world, and helped Random Access Memories become one of the most important albums of the 2010s. But beyond the awards and numbers, it did something much harder, it brought funk, disco, and live musicianship back into the mainstream in a huge way. This song is perfect. Full discussion on Substack - link in bio. “My Forbidden Lover” is a 1979 single by American disco band Chic, released as the second single from their third studio album Risqué on Atlantic Records. The track was recorded at Power Station in New York City in 1979 and issued in several versions: an album cut around 4:39–4:40, a 3:30 7” single edit, and an extended 6:29 12” mix. Written and produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers, it follows “Good Times” in the group’s single chronology, with the original 7” pairing it with “What About Me?” on the B-side. On release, “My Forbidden Lover” reached No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart, while in the U.S. it peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 33 on the R&B chart, and helped the album’s disco tracks collectively reach No. 3 on the Billboard disco chart. By the time “My Forbidden Lover” appeared, Chic had already become one of the defining acts of the late-1970s disco era. Formed in New York City in the mid-1970s by guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards, the band first broke through with “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)” in 1977, followed by “Everybody Dance” and a self-titled debut album on Atlantic. Their second album C’est Chic (1978) produced the global hit “Le Freak”, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became Atlantic’s best-selling single at the time, as well as “I Want Your Love,” another major club and chart success. By 1979, Rodgers and Edwards were also in demand as outside producers and writers, operating as The Chic Organization and crafting the Sister Sledge album We Are Family, which yielded hits like “He’s the Greatest Dancer,” “Lost in Music” and the title track. “My Forbidden Lover” arrives in this peak period, immediately after the success of “Good Times,” which had reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in August 1979.
