if you want to live a lower tox lifestyle in 2025, one of the best places to start is in your kitchen with things you use often, especially things we use for our kiddos
when it comes to kids, i recommend ditching plastic cups, water bottles, plates, bowls, utensils + bento boxes, etc and replacing with stainless steel, glass + silicone to reduce their exposure to microplastics
kids are more at risk from microplastics due to their smaller size, and exposure can disrupt hormones, release harmful chemicals into their bodies + weaken their immune systems over time
start by making one swap at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed, you got this!

BRChoosing non-toxic kitchen utensils, measuring cups, steamers and strainers is essential to prevent harmful chemicals from leaching into your high-quality food ingredients. For instance, black plastic utensils have been found to contain toxic flame retardants, such as decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE), which can pose health risks like cancer and hormonal disruptions. Any plastic utensil will release microplastics and other harmful chemicals especially when exposed to heat through cooking.
Instead use utensils made from the following materials:
✅ Stainless Steel: Durable and non-reactive, stainless steel is resistant to corrosion and will not leach chemicals into food. Go for 18/0 grade, which is nickel-free for avoiding nickel when cooking acidic foods
✅ Wood: Natural wooden utensils are gentle on cookware surfaces and free from synthetic chemicals

JUHere are some of the non-toxic swaps I’ve made in my kitchen over the years to help reduce daily exposure to harsh chemicals and hormone disruptors:
→ Stainless steel pans & measuring cups instead of nonstick cookware coated in PFAS (a group of “forever chemicals” linked to hormone and immune disruption)
→ Glass jars & containers to avoid plastic leaching, especially with hot or acidic foods
→ A PFAS-free air fryer so I’m not heating food on toxic coatings
→ Unbleached parchment paper—no chlorine bleach
→ A wood cutting board that won’t flake microplastics like plastic cutting boards
→ Molly’s Suds dishwasher pods—no chlorine, synthetic fragrances, or harsh surfactants
→ Rowe Casa dish soap made with essential oils and clean, simple ingredients
→ Force of Nature spray
→ Blueland Hand Soap
→ A Clearly Filtered water filter to reduce chlorine, microplastics, and heavy metals
→ And of course, my Blendtec that I’ve had for years

CL15 things I no longer keep in my kitchen‼️
Over the years I’ve swapped out items that can leach chemicals, release fumes, or add hormone disruptors into my food and environment. The goal isn’t perfection…it’s just making sure I’m not getting unnecessary, excess exposure every single day.
These are the things I avoid now, and what I use instead:
1. Silicone baking mats → Unbleached parchment paper
2. Non-stick kitchen utensils → Stainless steel or bamboo
3. Canned food → Glass jars, frozen, or fresh options
4. Teflon baking sheets/pans → Stainless steel, ceramic, or glass bakeware
5. Toxic dish soap → Non-toxic brands like Branch Basics or Attitude
6. Plastic cutting boards → Bamboo or wood cutting boards
7. Seed oils (canola, soybean, corn etc) → Olive, avocado, or coconut oil
8. Plastic straws → Glass or stainless steel straws
9. Toxic dishwasher detergent → Non-toxic brands like Blueland
10. Aluminum foil → Unbleached parchment paper or glass bakeware
11. Plastic containers → Glass storage containers
12. Scented garbage bags → Unscented or compostable trash bags
13. Toxic cleaning products → Vinegar + water, castile soap, or non-toxic brands
14. Plastic bottles and cups → Glass or stainless steel drinkware
15. Tap water → Filtered water (AquaTru, Clearly Filtered, Reverse Osmosis etc.)
