3 years ago after a difficult client encounter I walked back to the treatment area and melted against the wall. And bawled my eyes out. (Just like you see at the beginning of the video). That was a pivotal turning point for me in my career. I had experienced depression before (post-partum), but it was back and it was BAD. I had compassion fatigue, burnout, and was depressed. If you work in Vet Med, it’s not a matter of IF, but WHEN you get to this point unfortunately. It probably won’t look exactly like this, but you feel it. Do you leave the field? It’s okay if the answer is yes. Only YOU know your limits. Or do you stay? I am here to HELP you if you’re answer is yes. There’s lots of resources out there. Even if you aren’t to your breaking point yet. Start thinking! Be aware! Read “The Forgotten Nurses” by Author (and LVT) Tracy Bittner. Go explore @notonemorevet They are a non-profit that helps fight suicide and depression in the Veterinary Medicine field. I CAN’T do it for you!! For those of you waiting for a sign, THIS is it and YOU have to take the actions!! I love you! One of the biggest misconceptions in veterinary medicine is that the more compassion you give, the faster you burn out. Many believe that constantly showing empathy to clients will drain emotional reserves and lead to compassion fatigue. But research (hello, Compassionomics 📖) suggests the opposite—compassionate communication actually helps protect against burnout. 🔹 Connection Creates Meaning Burnout isn’t just about being overwhelmed—it’s about feeling disconnected from why we do this work. Compassionate interactions remind us why we entered this field: to help animals and support the people who love them. 🔹 Compassion Lowers Stress, Not Increases It Clients who feel heard and understood are less likely to argue or resist treatment plans. This reduces conflict, frustration, and emotional exhaustion for the team. 🔹 It’s Not Compassion That Burns Us Out—It’s the Barriers to Expressing It We don’t get exhausted from caring—we burn out when we feel unable to help. Time pressure, financial constraints, and system limitations take a toll. But when we have the tools to communicate effectively and set boundaries, we can engage empathetically without it becoming overwhelming. 🔹 Empathy Strengthens Team Culture Compassion isn’t just for clients. Supporting each other, recognizing struggles, and fostering a culture of team-based empathy reduces workplace toxicity and builds resilience. 🩺💙 The takeaway? Compassionate care isn’t a drain—it’s a tool for sustainability. It’s not about absorbing every client’s stress; it’s about acknowledging concerns while setting boundaries. Far from causing burnout, clinical empathy is one of the best tools to prevent it. Drop a 💙 if you’ve felt the impact of compassionate care in your career! #VetMed #CompassionateCare #ClinicalEmpathy #VeterinaryWellness #NotOneMoreVet #BurnoutPrevention #DogtorJosh #NAVN

Here’s what I walked into every day at my first job as a veterinarian: Staff yelling and cursing at each other. Techs cursing at me. A beyond chaotic schedule. And then I found out I was being paid A LOT less than a brand new male grad with way less experience 😒 So I moved to another clinic, hoping for better…but I was given 10 days of vacation, no paid sick leave, and slowly handed the responsibility of running the practice…alone. I stayed late nearly every night - my life became work, dinner, sleep. Repeat. I burned out hard. Less than four years in, I was seriously considering leaving vet med. Not because I didn’t care about the animals or the clients…but because of how I was treated as a doctor. I know not every clinic is like this but I couldn’t keep sacrificing my mental health. So I made one last-ditch effort to stay: I became a relief vet. And it saved me. Making my own schedule, only working for the hospitals I like, and taking time off when I needed to brought me back to life. I remembered why I became a vet in the first place because I could practice in a sustainable way that worked for me! Then COVID hit and life pushed me toward something I never expected - pet nutrition. Fast forward to today: I run my own business doing what I love more than anything - helping you give your pets the healthiest, happiest, longest life possible through nutrition! I couldn’t be more grateful and wouldn’t trade it for anything. She didn’t know it yet… But everything was about to change 💫 Just a reminder and note of encouragement for my fellow vets who may be in a bad place or questioning this profession…it IS possible to create a career and life you love ❤️ #veterinarian #veterinarianlife #vetmed #vetmedicine #veterinariansofinstagram #notonemorevet #mentalhealthawarness

I hadn’t heard of @saveafox_rescue until the news came out. Mikayla was gone. I had goosebumps looking at beautiful, sweet soul was staring back at me from my phone. I listened to her husband crying as he explained the horrible loss - to him, their daughter, and the world. I watched their videos from when Mikayla was alive and saw someone I would have been friends with. Somebody with similar values, passions, and dreams. The last week has been no different than so many for me. I post a video showing life here in a veterinary desert and people attack. People berate me in DMs and comments. People who have no clue. Usually this negativity is all concentrated on my rescue account @boonieflightproject , but as I broach other vet med topics here, it follows me. People. Be nice to your animal welfare folks. Shelter staff. Rescuers. Be nice to your veterinarian. Your vet nurse. The receptionist. Each other. Just be nice. Go support @saveafox_rescue in Mikayla’s honor. Help her legacy live on. #saveafox #mentalhealth #animalwelfare #nomv #notonemorevet #animalrescue

One in six Veterinary professionals considers suicide. That's three times the US national average. This September, I’m supporting @notonemorevet in their mission to help those working in the Veterinary field, by providing life-saving support and resources. Please check out @notonemorevet to learn more about how you can help. And be kind to your veterinarians and vet clinic staff. They’re dealing with a huge influx of new pet owners, rising costs of running their clinics, often low wages, long hours, extreme emotions, and impossible scenarios daily. Thank you to all those who work within the veterinary field for your compassion and care 💜 #veterinary #vets #notonemorevet #nomv #veterinario #vet #veterinarian #veterinarianlife #dogtor #veterinariansofinstagram #vetsofinstagram

When I try to explain to my friends and even family the challenges of my job sometimes I’m lost for words. I love my job but sometimes when I reflect on my day the breadth of challenges and emotions I process is intense. Both my own and the people I council through some of the most stressful experiences of their lives with a dying pet. I want to share the story of one of the hardest humane euthanasias I’ve had to perform in my career. The details of the country and family have been left out for privacy reasons. This is not a plea for sympathy but rather I hope by sharing my stories I can create understanding for everyone of what the human experience is like of working in clinical practice. The responsibility and trust placed in vets to perform humane euthanasias, sometimes multiple times a day, is a unique part of my profession that is hard to explain without example. I see the profound responsibility of this task and also recognise the burden of shouldering it on a personal level. Even though I still love my job the stark fact is that poor mental health remains a huge crisis in veterinary medicine around the world. This is not the only reason but hard to deny the toll it can take on the animal lovers that the profession naturally draws in. Something I want to touch on in future as well on this page. This is dedicated to all the veterinarians and veterinary professionals around the world doing their best for the animals in their care. Trying their best to comfort the people in front of us hurting just as much in their darkest moments Rest in peace to all the animals we have had to say goodbye to ❤️🌈 - - - - - #vet #vetmed #vetlife #veterinarian #veterinary #notonemorevet #mentalhealth

Every day, a veterinarian is villainized. For charging for their time. For enforcing boundaries. For not being able to fix the unfixable. For being a human being. We’re told we only care about money—by people who think love should cover the cost of medicine. We’re berated for not doing enough—by those who don’t see our reality. We’re expected to save every patient, stay silent when disrespected, and somehow still go home smiling. ‌ This profession will break your heart in a thousand quiet ways. But the public backlash? The online hate? The accusations that we’re cold or greedy or uncaring? That’s what cuts the deepest. ‌ We’re not villains. We’re not machines. We’re human beings doing our best—with limited time, limited resources, and unlimited pressure. ‌ Please—see us for who we are. Not who it’s easier to blame. ❤️
