OCD often gets confused with OCPD, leading people to wrongly believe that a love of organization and order = OCD 📣 . OCD: egodystonic (opposite to a person’s values and desires) . OCPD: egosyntonic (in alignment with a person’s values and desires) . I like my bookshelf to look like this and it has nothing to do with my OCD. My OCD nearly took my life. Someone asked me to do a comparison between Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) and Autism, so here’s a brief overview of some differences. On the surface, they can sometimes look similar. People might notice routines, strong preferences, attention to detail, or rigidity. But the underlying experience is very different. Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is a personality pattern often centered around high standards, responsibility, order, and doing things the “right” way. These traits can sometimes create tension when flexibility is needed, especially in relationships or shared tasks. Autism is neurodevelopmental and can involve sensory sensitivities, communication difficulties, and a need for predictability or routine to help regulate overwhelm. One important distinction is what’s driving the behavior. 👉🏼For someone with OCPD, it may be about maintaining standards, order, or control. 👉🏼For someone with autism, routines or structure may help support regulation, predictability, and navigating a world built around neurotypical social rules. This isn’t an exhaustive comparison, and experiences within both autism and OCPD vary widely. People are complex, and sometimes there can even be overlap or co-occurring conditions. 👇🏼Curious to hear from you: What differences have you noticed between autism and OCPD? #ocpd #autism #NHtherapist #nhtherapy

Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is a mental health condition characterized by a chronic preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control.OCPD pertains more to a pervasive pattern of behaviors and attitudes that affect various aspects of a person’s life. ### Main Symptoms of OCPD: 1. **Perfectionism**: An overwhelming need for everything to be perfect, leading to inefficiency and distress when perfection is not achieved. 2. **Preoccupation with Order and Rules**: An excessive focus on details, rules, lists, schedules, and organization to the extent that the main point of the activity is lost. 3. **Control Issues**: A strong desire to be in control of situations, often leading to reluctance to delegate tasks or work with others unless they agree to do things exactly as specified. 4. **Workaholism**: Dedication to work and productivity to the exclusion of leisure activities and friendships. 5. **Rigidity and Stubbornness**: An inflexible adherence to personal standards and principles, often leading to difficulties in relationships and adapting to new situations. 6. **Inability to Discard Worn-Out or Worthless Items**: Hoarding behaviors, stemming from a sense that items might be needed in the future, even if they are no longer useful. 7. **Reluctance to Spend Money**: An overly frugal approach to spending on oneself and others, often viewing money as something to be hoarded for future catastrophes. These symptoms can lead to significant impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning.

I’m not saying this is ALL I learned about OCPD in grad school, but… let’s just say most of the learning I have done about OCPD has been self-led! It’s possible OCPD may have been covered in more depth in a different class, but I don’t think so. I’d love to dig up my old class notes if I still have them and see what I wrote down (if anything!) about OCPD from the lecture that day. I wanted to look back at this in part out of curiosity, and in part because I often hear people express disappointment that a previous therapist they worked with didn’t realize they had OCPD. I just wanted to offer a data point here to show that many mental health professionals who come from good programs (like I did!) aren’t taught much about OCPD during their training. For me, I truly believe it was just these two pages at the very end of the chapter about personality disorders, at the very end of one of my first grad school classes. If you’re working with a therapist with a different specialty, say trauma, or even OCD, they really might not have much background knowledge about OCPD. I think this is partly inevitable. After all, there’s a LOT of education to pack into a graduate program! But I do suspect OCPD gets glossed over in training programs more frequently than many other mental health concerns. Given the prevalence rate of OCPD in the US (estimated over 7%) and the significant toll it can take on people’s lives, we really can’t afford to not learn about this. #obsessivecompulsivepersonalitydisorder #ocpd #ocpdawareness #personalitydisorders #mentalhealthawareness #psychology #clinicalpsychology #blindspots #youcantknowwhatyoudontknow #lifelonglearning #continuingeducation #therapistsofinstagram #psychologistsofinstagram #chicagonorthshore
