This week we recognize the work that probation, parole, and community supervision professionals do for our public safety. During Tuesday’s Board meeting, my colleagues and I presented a Resolution to the #OCProbation Department, recognizing July 16 to July 22 as Probation Services Week. I’ve had the privilege of working with the OC Probation Department since the beginning of my career as a public defender. With the recent changes in criminal law here in California, the responsibilities of the Probation Department have increased substantially. Their work not only requires a level of empathy and compassion but also strict adherence to the roles of probation and supervision to help those on probation transition back to a productive life. They are the conduit between the court, county, prosecution, and defendants. Thank you, @oc_probation, for your tireless dedication to making our community a safe, healthy, and fulfilling place to live, work, and play.

ASSOCIATING WITH GANG MEMBER Violation of Special Condition (20) of the Order of Probation, by knowingly associating with criminal gang members or associates for the purpose of benefitting, promoting, or furthering the interests of a criminal gang, except as authorized by law enforcement officials, prosecutorial authorities, or the court, for the purpose of aiding in the investigation of criminal activity, and as grounds for belief that the offender violated his probation, Officer Bacallao states that the offender did associate with Tokiyo Major, Julian McMillian, Christopher Thomas, depict Mr. Walker, and more a criminal gang member, on 09/13/2024 as evidenced by social medio video post, as told to Officer Bacallao by Agent C. POC Commissioners express concern as LA County Probation refuses to deny that OC spray (pepper spray) will be used at Campus Kilpatrick. After years of advocacy and Board motions requiring Probation to phase out OC spray at its detention facilities and specifically on girls, the Department will not deny or confirm a plan to bring the chemical agent into its flagship facility. The answer should be a clear “no.” Youth deserve rehabilitation and care, not chemical force. #LACounty #Probation #YouthJustice #EndPepperSpray

Message from @ocgov Young Adult Court is a collaborative program in the Orange County Superior Court that helps young adults ages 18 to 25 break the cycle of recidivism through Evidence-Based Practices. Participants work with the court, probation officers, case managers, and clinicians to complete supervision, counseling, education, and employment programs. The program is pioneered by Orange County Superior Court Judge Maria Hernandez and @ucisoceco Professor Dr. Elizabeth Cauffman and also made possible by @oc_probation, @orangewoodfoundation, Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, and other community partners.   🌟 With eight recent graduates, the program has now helped 46 young adults graduate felony-free and move toward brighter futures 🌟 #️⃣: #dtsa #santaana #orangecounty

Extremely Dangerous and Violent Criminal Who was Recaptured in Mexico Following Orange County District Attorney Warning Sentenced to Maximum Three Years for Violating Probation After Walking Away from Santa Ana Halfway House SANTA ANA, Calif. – An extremely dangerous and violent criminal who was arrested in Mexico in March following a weeklong manhunt after he walked away from a Santa Ana halfway house, prompting a public warning by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, has been sentenced to the maximum of three years in jail for violating his probation. Ike Nicholas Souzer, 21, was arrested in Rosarito, Mexico by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Mexican officials acting on information from the Orange County District Attorney’s undercover AB 109 Task Force that Souzer had crossed into Mexico near the San Ysidro/Mexico border. . . . “Ike Souzer is finally having to answer to the consequences of his own actions to turn every opportunity he was given to make a fresh start into another opportunity to continue his life of crime,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “My prosecutors have spent years trying to keep this violent criminal behind bars only to be stopped by the very judges who instead of protecting public safety gave him break after break to turn his life around. Orange County Superior Court Judge Craig Robison put public safety first and is holding Ike Souzer fully accountable for his actions by sentencing him to the maximum allowed under the law. I am incredibly grateful for Deputy District Attorney Matt Bradbury and the prosecutors in our Special Prosecutions Unit and the men and women of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office AB 109 Task Force who have spent years working to ensure that this violent and dangerous threat to public safety is held responsible for his crimes.” . . .
