CBAlexis Wilson is one of more than half a million people who rely on support from the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), according to Ontario’s auditor general.
•
With several health conditions leaving her unable to work, Wilson gets $1,169 each month from the ODSP. After she’s paid her rent and phone bill, she has exactly $125 left each month for food and anything extra.

“There are days when I don't have enough food to eat every day that week,” Wilson told CBC Toronto. “So I'll just go, ‘OK, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday I'll eat,’ and that'll be that. And I just distract myself in the middle days.”

Wilson and others with disabilities hope the winner of the provincial election on June 2 will increase the monthly payment.
•
"I don't know if I want to live another 60 years like this,” she said. “It's a long time to live with very little money."
•
CBC News asked the four major parties if they would raise ODSP rates and if so, what metric they would use to determine those increases. Parties were given more than 24 hours to respond.

KEConservatives have pushed Ontarians living with disabilities into legislated poverty. People are worse off now than ever, and can barely afford housing or healthy food.
@mlhealthunit sent a letter urgently requesting that the province raise social assistance rates, writing "Food insecurity has a pervasive impact on health; and there is a need for income-based solutions."
I'm calling on the government to listen to experts, double ODSP rates immediately, and finally bring ODSP recipients out of poverty.

PEAt Queen’s Park, I once again presented petitions calling on the government to immediately double social assistance rates.
There are over 900,000 Ontarians relying on Ontario Works or ODSP, and the Ford government has done virtually nothing to improve their lives in the face of skyrocketing inflation. Instead, the government has legislated social assistance rates that not only keep people on OW or ODSP living below the poverty line, but make sure they will never get out of poverty.

DOEveryday, people living on ODSP reach out to my office with heartbreaking stories. These are people who through no fault of their own are forced to choose between whether they eat this month or pay the rent. These are people who cannot plan for tomorrow in case their spouse makes a few dollars more than they made the previous month. This government can bring meaningful, immediate change to ODSP and other programs. They must end the clawbacks to make life easier, not harder.
