I have OCD. And if I don’t actively treat it, it runs my life. This is what compulsive handwashing can look like for me. Not because I want to. But because my brain sounds the alarm like something terrible will happen if I don’t. The thought that “I’ll contaminate my home or my children” feels like a certainty and I’ll have failed as a mother to protect them. This is both contamination OCD and Harm OCD OCD isn’t just about germs or harm though. It’s about fear and it’s about intrusive thoughts. It’s about a nervous system trying to protect me the only way it knows how. The way it has since I was 5 years old. So I practice ERP. Exposure and Response Prevention. Because OCD doesn’t get better with reassurance. It gets better when I resist the compulsion and sit with uncertainty. Every time I sit with the anxiety instead of obeying it, I teach my brain: we are safe even when we don’t know we are for certain. I choose this work so my kids get a present mom, not a fear-driven one. Recovery is uncomfortable, consistent, and a lot of work. # But staying trapped is worse. #OCDRecovery #ERPtherapy #AnxietyHealing #TheGroundedPath

Visual representation of the OCD and Non-OCD brain. I break down how compulsions (like checking, seeking reassurance, or avoiding) might feel helpful in the moment, but strengthen the anxiety in the long term. Learning how to tolerate uncertainty is what actually helps the brain heal from OCD. #ocd #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #intrusivethoughts #compulsions #erptherapy #ocdtherapy #ocdtherapy

OCD is one of the most debilitating disorders, its the hardest to treat, and it is the most misunderstood. so many therapists are under educated about OCD leading to so many people wrongly diagnosed. I was told I "just had anxiety" my entire life until I hit a breaking point after my 2nd kid and was finally diagnosed with "severe ocd". it is not a quirk. it is not about being perfect, or cleaning or organizing. infact, no where in the diagnostic criteria does it mention cleaning and organizing. some versions may include these things as compulsions but that is NOT what OCD is at all. and every time you say "im so OCD" youre spreading misinformation and perpetuating false stereotypes #ocd #ocdsymptoms #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #obsessivecompulsivedisorder

OCD can latch onto the things your child values most, and twist them into something confusing, uncomfortable, and even terrifying. Not because they want those thoughts… but because OCD targets what matters, and then floods it with doubt. “What if that means something?” “What if this says something about me?” “What if I’m not who I thought I was?” And just like that, ordinary moments, sitting next to a sibling, talking to a teacher, loving a pet, watching a show, can turn into spirals of fear, shame, and avoidance. So your child might: • pull away suddenly • avoid people or situations • overreact in ways that don’t make sense • get stuck trying to “figure it out” From the outside, it can look confusing… or even concerning. But this is OCD, not desire, not identity, not intent. What helps? Start by naming it for what it is, OCD. Avoid trying to reassure or “prove” the thoughts wrong. And know that this is very treatable with the right support, especially with ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) therapy. Most importantly, help your child understand that thoughts are not facts, and they don’t define who they are. Anxiety and OCD can sometimes look similar on the surface, and many people can absolutely have both. They are often co-occurring conditions. But while they can overlap, they are not the same thing. Anxiety typically involves excessive worry, distress, or fear. OCD is defined by obsessions and compulsions, whether those compulsions are physical or mental. Compulsions can look like: • Reassurance seeking • Checking • Repeating • Avoidance • Confessing • Mental reviewing • Rumination • Trying to “fix” or neutralize thoughts OCD is not always about fear, and it is not always about certainty. It can involve disgust, intrusive thoughts, magical thinking, “just right” feelings, false responsibility, or an intense internal urge to perform compulsions. The key difference is that OCD creates repetitive compulsive responses that keep the cycle going. Understanding this matters because anxiety and OCD often require different approaches, and misunderstanding OCD can unintentionally reinforce it. The more we understand what is really driving our child’s struggles, the better we can support them. If your child struggles with anxiety or OCD, learning how OCD actually works can be a huge first step. 🧡 Register for my FREE webinar, 5 Things Every Parent Needs to Know When Raising a Child with OCD at www.natashadaniels.com/ocdwebinar or comment OCD WEBINAR and I’ll DM you the link. #ocd #ocdproblems #ocdrecovery #ocdawareness #childocd
