Orcas are called “killer whales” because they are powerful apex predators. They hunt sharks, seals, rays, and even whales with incredible intelligence and teamwork. So yes, they can be dangerous. But here’s what most people don’t know: in the wild, there are no confirmed fatal attacks on humans. Orcas are not random killers. They are selective hunters, deeply social, and humans are not part of their natural prey. They live in family groups called pods, often led by a matriarch. They pass down hunting techniques, communication patterns, and even different dialects from one generation to the next. What you see here is not aggression. It’s awareness. Curiosity. Control. They could come closer. They could overpower almost anything in the ocean. But they don’t. And that is what makes this so powerful. Ethical places to see orcas in the wild include Norway, Iceland, British Columbia, Alaska, New Zealand, and Baja California. Swimming with them is rare and should only happen with strict respect: no chasing, no touching, no pressure. The best encounters are never forced. Just presence, patience, and respect for the ocean. Would you feel calm… or terrified? 👀✨ #orca #oceanconservation #marinelife #wildlifeencounter #oceanlife 📹 Video by the original creator — credit in audio ✍️ Written by Ocean Calling Retreats

The 8,000km Sacrifice: Why Dolphins Act as « Fighter Jets » for Tired Mothers 🌊🐋 Imagine swimming 8,000 kilometers through punishing currents without a single meal. By the time a Humpback mother reaches the nurseries of Moorea in September, she is a hero running on empty—starving, drained, and profoundly sleep-deprived. Beside her is a newborn calf born with almost no body fat. In the ocean, fat is buoyancy. Without it, the baby cannot float. For weeks, the mother has manually lifted her calf to the surface for every single breath, 24 hours a day. She is at the limit of biological endurance. Then, the « Fighter Jets » arrive. 🐬🛡️ This is a sophisticated tactical alliance known as Epimeletic behavior—a rare form of cross-species altruism. Local dolphin pods act as a tactical escort, flanking the exhausted pair like a flight of fighter jets on high alert. The Mechanics of the Alliance: • Sonar Perimeter: Dolphins use high-frequency sonar to scan for predators, acting as a radar system the exhausted mother can no longer maintain. • The « Logging » Recovery: This protection allows the mother to enter « logging »—a deep sleep where she shuts down half her brain to finally recover her strength. • Hydrodynamic Synergy: Dolphins « bow-ride » the whale’s pressure wave, moving at high speeds with zero effort, staying fresh to defend the calf at a moment’s notice. The September Sanctuary 🏝️ In the « Blue Room » of Moorea, September visibility reaches 30 meters. It is the only place on Earth where the « Golden Ratio » of warmth and clarity allows this interspecies trust to flourish. Most see a beautiful encounter; the trained eye sees a starving mother being kept alive by a pod of dolphins. It’s a reminder that in the deep, the strongest survive through connection, not just force. The ocean isn’t just a place of survival; it is a place of profound, tactical empathy. #marinelife #marinebiology #oceanlife #oceanconservation #whalemigration 📹 Video by the original creator — credit in audio ✍️ Written by Ocean Calling Retreats

The ocean’s gentle giant — the whale shark 🐋✨ Swimming with a Whale Shark is a dream for many people. But when too many boats and swimmers surround them, that dream can become stressful for the animal. Wildlife tourism can help protect these incredible creatures — when it’s done responsibly. Ethical whale shark tourism means: 🌊 Keeping a safe distance 🚫 Never touching or chasing 🚤 Limiting the number of boats and swimmers 🐠 Respecting the animal’s natural behavior When we choose responsible operators and follow the rules, tourism can support conservation, local communities, and the protection of marine life. Let’s experience the ocean without overwhelming it. Would you swim with whale sharks responsibly? #whaleshark #ethicaltourism #oceanconservation #protectmarineLife #wildlifeethics oceans marineconservation @nakawe_project

Add that to my resume, I guess…. Wondering what you can do to support the environment in a variety of ways? 📞 Call your representatives at 5calls.org. Be heard & engaged! 🪼 Take action in other ways. Submit comments during comment periods, go to a public hearing on issues in your area to speak up. Follow pages like @futureswell to stay updated on actions you can take on issues impacting the environment 🐳 If you are able, support NGOs this year. Many NGOs are on the frontlines of lawsuits & pushing back against the policy changes enacted by this administration. They are also dealing with the funding cuts by the government, limiting what they can do. Trump has & will continue to strip away funding for NGOs so we will be much more reliant on donations. 🗣️ Speak up. Talk to your friends, family, & communities. 🌱 Get involved in your community. Support your library, attend volunteer events, farmers markets, etc. Support local mutual aid. Join a local buy-nothing group or co-op. 📚 Read & learn. Pick up books on decolonization, white supremacy, history, etc. Delve deeper & become more informed. These don’t have to be books either, there are lots of great articles, podcast, creators, & documentaries out there to utilize. #MarineBiology #wildlifephotography #underwaterworld #oceanconservation

Fibropapillomatosis—a disease affecting sea turtles. She swam right past me… strong, calm, and still fighting. 💚🐢 But look closely at her mouth. This beautiful female Green sea turtle is living with Fibropapillomatosis, a disease affecting sea turtles around the world, including here in Hawaiʻi. Despite the tumors, many turtles keep swimming, feeding, and surviving. A few things to know about this disease: • 🦠 Fibropapillomatosis causes tumors that grow on soft tissue like the eyes, flippers, neck, and mouth. • 🌊 It’s linked to a herpesvirus that spreads among turtles in the ocean. • 🍽 Tumors around the mouth can make it harder for turtles to eat. • 👁 When tumors grow near the eyes, they can block vision and make survival difficult. • 🐢 Some turtles recover naturally, while others need help from wildlife rehabilitation programs. • 🌱 Scientists believe pollution, runoff, and environmental stress may make the disease worse. Yet she kept swimming… graceful as ever. The ocean is beautiful, but it also tells stories like this one. 💙 #seaturtle #fibropapillomatosis #oceanconservation #marinewildlife #wildlifeencounter

Tope sharks are one of Southern California’s most underrated predators, often cruising our kelp forests and sandy bottoms just offshore. They can grow over 7 feet long, making them one of the largest sharks you’ll find in local waters, yet they’re non-aggressive and incredibly graceful. These sharks are highly migratory, moving along the California coast as water temps and food sources change, and they play a huge role in keeping fish populations balanced. Spotting a tope shark in SoCal is a reminder that our coastal ecosystems are still wild, healthy, and very much alive

Friendly reminder harbor seals are protected marine mammals. If you see one on land stay at least 50 feet away. If you see one in the water remain calm and still and let them control the distance. Grateful to the many people who messaged me reports about a tiger with a possible rope wrapped on her head, I am happy to report I went to find her and she found me. I am relieved to see she is not currently entangled ❤️ though it makes me sad to think of the pain she has endured to show such a scar. The visit to this place to look for that tiger put me in a position to remove some dragging line from an oceanic whitetip. Although there is still some remaining line, at least at the length of the body there is a reduced chance of secondary entanglement, a reduction in drag, and especially with the debris that was compromising her countershading she’ll be able to better blend in as she naturally should leading to more successful natural predation and safety from other predators. Manō (sharks) are not puppies, they are capable apex predators, but they are also not monsters. Giving them the respect they deserve means sometimes moving out of their way, getting out of their space, observing from a distance, and always speaking up for them to stop the unsustainable and cruel killing that still happens around the world. Respect while in their space also means being fully aware of your surroundings and their interest. Not just the sharks interest in us, but what their needs are. To be constantly considerate of their needs and making moves to assure that our presence is not interfering with their needs. Unique events that sometimes draw many sharks together can be fascinating but I personally think should be treated as sacred… Deeply grateful for the kind help finding these sharks and time with friends @big_island_billy @mango__shark 🥭🦈❤️ @yasmimstrachan @barspinnerr @juansharks @captsharkbait Mahalo nui loa thank you again for sending @juansharks and I reports of entangled sharks, we live to help them and are happy to try to relive them of their silent human-caused suffering wherever and whenever we can. ❤️🦈❤️ #savesharks #sharks #shark #ocean #oceanconservation

Harbor seals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. It is illegal to harass, chase, touch, or intentionally disturb them. If you see one on land, stay at least 50–100 feet away. If one approaches you in the water, remain calm and let the seal control the interaction. The best encounters happen naturally when you respect their space.
