There's just over one week left to soak up the excitement of Sharks, closing March 22! 🦈 Please note: with March Break starting today, we highly recommend booking your visit in advance. Dr. Nathan Lujan (@potamophile) brings us up close to the smallest specimen of the biggest shark in the ocean, the whale shark, as well as the second-smallest: the pygmy shark! Both held in the palm of his hand, and reminders of the astounding diversity of this ancient group of fishes. Sharks is organized by American Museum of Natural History, New York. The Museum gratefully acknowledges Warner Bros. Discovery for its generous support of Sharks. A selection of footage in Sharks has been provided by Discovery's Shark Week.

Who run the (marine science) world? Girls! 💪 March is #WomensHistoryMonth, and we’re shining a spotlight on the marine biologist and inventor who created the aquarium as we know it today! From dressmaker to self-taught naturalist to eventual “Mother of Aquariophily”, Jeanne Villepreux-Power made an impact on the marine science world when she invented three different glass apparatuses to study life in the ocean. She is credited with discovering that Argonauta argo (a type of pelagic octopus) forms its own shell, 🐚 and she was even the first to document octopuses using tools to open shells of their prey! Take some time to enjoy discovering the amazing adaptations of marine life when you gaze into our tanks... and remember that one woman’s invention was the starting point to what you see all around you at the Aquarium today 💙

Scientists exploring the deep ocean discovered one of the strangest creatures ever recorded — the Macropinna microstoma. This rare deep-sea fish has a transparent dome on its head where you can actually see its eyes inside. Found nearly 2,600 feet below the surface in the Pacific Ocean, this creature survives under extreme pressure and darkness. The deep ocean is still full of mysteries like this. #deepocean #oceancreatures #deepseacreatures #mysteryoftheocean #sciencefacts #rareanimals #barreleyefish #oceanmysteries #wildlife #didyouknow #reel #reelsinstagram😍 #instagramreel #instagram #viral #trending
