OCA baby whale’s survival depends completely on one thing: its mother’s energy.
In Moorea, humpback whale calves are growing fast — gaining up to 45 kg a day (100 lbs) — and that growth comes from one source only: their mother’s milk.
And that milk is not simple.
It’s extremely rich, high in fat, and produced while the mother is often not eating at all during this period.
She arrives here after a long migration, already running on stored energy… and then gives everything to her calf.
Every swim.
Every breath.
Every drop of milk.
That’s why this moment is so fragile.
If the mother gets stressed, disturbed, or forced to move too much, she burns energy she cannot easily replace.
Less energy → less milk → slower growth → lower survival chances for the baby.
It’s that direct.
So protecting baby whales is not just about the baby.
It’s about protecting the mother.
Giving her space.
Keeping the environment calm.
Letting her rest.
Because if she can’t recover here…
the next generation doesn’t get its start.
