Come testify to support pause evictions, save lives on March 3rd at City Hall! Meeting starts at 9:30am please come and sign in. This will help families who are not able to make rent due to operation metro surge, and the continued ice presence. We know that evictions do not make people safe. What this ordinance will do is pause eviction proceedings for 60 days temporarily. This measure will help give people time to get the money they need to pay for rent. This is the only tool we have to save lives and keep people housed without an eviction moratorium. Please ask the Mayors Office to support this. We will be voting on this tomorrow in committee, and then the final vote will be on March 5 at the council meeting. Written comments can be made to councilcomment@Minneapolismn.gov

Mayor Jacob Frey just vetoed Pause Evictions, Save Lives — a policy that would have given families impacted by Operation Metro Surge more time before eviction. This veto puts thousands of renters at risk, especially immigrant families who were forced to stay home during Metro Surge and fell behind on rent in one month. Experts supported this policy. Sixteen state legislators supported it. Impacted families begged for it. The Mayor still said no. On March 26th, the City Council will vote to override this veto. Tomorrow at our Committee of the Whole meeting we’re taking up Pause Evictions Save Lives, a policy that will temporarily extend pre-eviction notice from 30 to 60 days until August 31st. This will give residents more time to get resources and support so that families can stay together and we can keep people in their homes. We’re also taking action to request a full review of the City’s surveillance technologies. It’s going to be a long road to recovery, but we’re going to keep taking action on City Council to make sure we’re not leaving anyone behind.

Today the Minneapolis City Council passed Pause Evictions, Save Lives, an ordinance that would temporarily extend the pre-filing eviction notice from 30 days to 60 days through August 31, 2026. This temporary extension will provide renters more time to access resources for rental assistance. Operation Metro Surge forced thousands of families to shelter in place due to fear of harassment, violence, or abduction by ICE. The federal occupation has pushed Minneapolis into a looming eviction crisis, with the city estimating the impact of federal actions to create an additional $15.7 million monthly need for rental support. Many residents of families have relied on mutual aid and Go-Fund me campaigns to pay rent due to their inability to go to work safely, but fundraising has significantly slowed down in recent weeks. “Preventing eviction is always more cost-effective than trying to re-house someone who has been evicted. It’s also far more humane. Operation Metro Surge will cause a massive spike in homelessness unless local government steps in, which is why I led the City Council to both fund $1 million in rental assistance and now to pause evictions and save lives,” said Council Minority Leader Robin Wonsley, lead author on Pause Evictions, Save Lives. “Today we are deciding whether we are going to help keep our neighbors in their homes or not, during a time when they need it the most. We have a data driven and informed solution in front of us that can address the crisis we are facing. Thank you to my colleagues who chose to center the needs of our neighbors. I am now urging Mayor Frey to sign off on this measure” said Council Member Soren Stevenson, who co-authored Pause Evictions, Save Lives Council Vice President Jamal Osman co-authored Pause Evictions, Save Lives. He spoke directly to Mayor Frey and urged him not to veto the policy. “This is the time for the Mayor to stand up for immigrants. You showed up for press conferences and the promises were great, but we need you today. Please do not veto this policy.”

They must listen to Nova Scotians and restore trust in how our province is being managed. We’re calling on the government to table all out-of-budget spending going forward so that Nova Scotians can finally see and evaluate where the $6.7 billion went. And we're pushing for a Legislative Budget Officer to review assumptions, analyze risk, and evaluate policies before they are implemented. Nova Scotians deserve accountability — especially when their livelihoods are on the line.
