He performed miracles. He healed the sick. He raised the dead by God’s permission. But the Qur’an is clear about who he was and who he worshipped: “The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a messenger… He and his mother both ate food.” Qur’an 5:75 Eating, praying, and asking for help are signs of a servant not the Creator. Islam doesn’t lower Jesus. It places him correctly: as a beloved prophet who called people to worship One God, not himself. Respected scholar Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah highlights a crucial but often overlooked chapter of early Christian history: many of the first followers of Jesus (ʿĪsā, peace be upon him) did not believe he was crucified. To them, the Messiah could not be ultimately humiliated or defeated in such a manner. This perspective closely aligns with the Qur’anic statement that Jesus was not crucified, but that it was made to appear so. From this view, the Qur’an does not introduce a new claim centuries later it restores an earlier belief that existed before later theological developments became dominant. Understanding this helps reframe the crucifixion debate not as Islam versus Christianity, but as competing interpretations within early Christianity itself one of which the Qur’an affirms.
