I can’t imagine our world without our kid’s birth siblings 🥹 Open adoption isn’t just for birth parents, it’s also for my kid’s birth siblings! Adoption comes with gaining & losing but with open adoption you can hopefully fill those gaps with relationships still being present 🩷 And yes, my kids know who they are and love & adore them so much 🥰

Part 2… Four months after Ellis was born, we flew his biological brother out to come visit us. After 10 days he asked if he could stay longer. His mom agreed. He tried out and made the top football team. Made a big group of friends. And we created so many fun memories together and learned a lot from this amazing kid! After 7 months of living with us his mom was ready for him to come home. This is our version of open adoption. But the story doesn’t end there… continued on to part 3… We love and miss you guys! 28 years ago today, at 15 years old, I gave birth to a tiny, beautiful baby girl. I didn’t raise her but I was very involved as I chose a family that was looking for an open adoption as well. 4 years ago, my daughter decided to go no contact with me and as someone (👋🏼) with an abandonment wound, it was literally my worst fear that came true. I miss her everyday and I’m really sad today but I’m also happy she’s alive, safe & pursuing a career that she’s talked about for a long time. Happy solar return to my first true love. PS. Before anyone commends me for my selflessness re: placing her for adoption, it was not my choice and I spent 2 years (from 15-17 years old) trying to get her back and then spiraling into darkness for the next several years when I came to terms with there being no chance of that. Some tough years followed with visitation, but the road finally smoothed out and I appreciate the kindness and openness of her/our adopted family. I learned a lot from them, including how to make a full holiday meal from scratch, spending every birthday with her and even having her as one of the maids of honor at my wedding. However, I am not an adoption advocate across the board especially when the mother wants to keep her baby but doesn’t have the resources or has even been coerced into the decision. Mothers, teen mothers and birth mothers are deserving of the support they need to be able to parent in the way their heart longs for. From my involvement in birth mother communities, this sentiment is strong with many of us b/c adoption didn’t feel like it was our choice. PPS. Please enter the comment section with kindness, I’m not sure why keyboard warriors write the weirdest things. 🫂The Snappie Hippie #adoption #birthmother #birthmomsupport #rawmotherhood #healing . . . . adoption birth mother mom support raw motherhood healing

Part 3: Less than a year after our son’s biological brother Sean moved back home, his birth mom called and asked us if we could help by taking her daughter while she got back on her feet. We of course said yes. So we flew her 4 year old out and this was the first time our son and his biological sister saw each other in person since he was born! She lived with us for 5 months until her mom was ready for her to come home. This is our version of open adoption! One big family! We love and miss you guys! This was supposed to be a simple nighttime vlog—getting ready for bed, packing, one last night in the hotel before flying home with our daughter. But I found myself having to cut out constant clips of me crying every few minutes, until I realized I was cutting out the wrong parts of the video. Because this needed to be seen. I was overflowing with love for my daughter… and just as overwhelmed with love for her birth mom. Knowing that in a matter of hours we would be flying thousands of miles away from the woman who changed my life forever broke me in ways I wasn’t prepared for. I know she knows she made the right choice for her daughter. And still, my heart ached for the pain she would have to walk through—one I couldn’t fix or carry for her. I loved my daughter instantly, and I loved her birth mom just as quickly. And leaving her hurt. There are people who believe adoptive parents “take and leave.” But you have no idea how deeply and immediately your heart becomes tied to another woman forever. This was God’s plan. And even when something is right, it can still hurt. Now we get to watch God heal. I wish I could go back and hug us both—and give us a glimpse of how beautiful this relationship would become in just a few short months. I got the thing I wanted most in this world—my daughter. And in the same breath, I received what I didn’t know I needed, but God did: her birth mom, as my sister. Ironic that an open adoption scared me the most and Was the thing I wanted the least and now.. She has changed me forever, become my best friend, and I cannot imagine life without her. The twins are 7 😭🎉 Seems like yesterday we got the text message that changed our life. Raising these two incredible souls has been one of the greatest honors of our life. They are growing up into two incredible humans, so different - yet both so sweet & dynamic. Some of you have been following along since I used to have to cover their faces with a 🌚🌝 , before the adoption was final. I don’t share too many of the details because it’s not our story to tell. We are so grateful to be their parents & gratefu for the love /support from their birth family. (Yes, it’s an open adoption.) HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILLIAM & SAMANTHA 🎈

"I permanently and forever give up all of my paternal rights and interest in this child." These are the heartbreaking words our son's "tummy mummy" had to sign in order to give her son the life she wanted him to have. Her selfless sacrifice is not lost on me and I promised her that this beautiful baby would always know that the start of his life's journey began with her love and her desire to protect him from the childhood she endured. On Mother's Day weekend, we honor Teari and all of the other birth moms who made that choice to give their babies more. We spoke to her last night and again I expressed my eternal gratitude for blessing our family with our son. We'll be sending her a care package and some of Asher's preschool art because although she gave up her rights, I know her heart has "interest." It is our hope that by sharing Asher's story and by sharing our relationship with his tummy mummy that more women in crisis will choose adoption. We know of two women who chose adoption and 9 other placements that have occurred because of this face. Our open adoption consists of photo exchanges, some videos and twice, a visit for a few hours. It has not always been easy but I expected that. We are two women from two very different worlds but I love her for allowing me to love this baby. Ultimately, I believe it is in this little boy's best interest to know that two mothers came together to give him the very best life we knew how. When I was 16 and pregnant, I was thinking about what my daughter and I needed in that season. I did what I felt was best at that time, trusting God in the process. But adoption doesn’t impact a few people or for just a moment in time—it impacts many. Grandparents. Cousins. Aunts. Siblings. Future spouses. Still, we’ve seen how open adoption can benefit all those relationships involved as well. Does it take away the ache of loss and what could have been? No, but it’s joyful moments and connection that help soften the ache. We have memories made and bucket lists to dream about—together Her adoptive parents helped make that happen, they believed in the value of birth family and sibling relationships too. So grateful we were all able extend our family in open adoption. When they are all together my heart is whole again. 🫶 PS. If you want to learn more about birth sibling relationships in adoption, we’ve got a Kitchen Table chat over on @the.ampersand.initiative on Sunday 2/22!
