When a light wave moves from a less dense medium (like air) into a denser medium (like water or glass), its speed decreases, causing the light to bend toward the normal—an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface. Conversely, moving from a denser to a less dense medium speeds up the light, bending it away from the normal. While the light’s frequency remains constant, its wavelength changes, and the degree of bending depends on the refractive indices of the two media, described by Snell’s Law. This phenomenon explains everyday observations such as a straw appearing bent in water, the focusing of lenses in glasses and cameras, and even the formation of rainbows, making refraction a fundamental principle in both physics and optics. #Refraction #LightPhysics #Optics #WaveBehavior #PhysicsExplained

At small angles, it bends as it leaves the glass. That’s refraction. Expected. Predictable. But slowly increase the angle… At around 42° (for glass), everything changes. The refracted ray vanishes. No light goes out. Instead, all of it bounces back inside. This is Total Internal Reflection. Not absorption. Not loss. Just full reflection. And it quietly runs some of the technologies we rely on every day: • Fiber optics carrying internet across oceans • The brilliance inside diamonds • Light guiding smoothly through water and optical devices It feels almost magical… But it’s just physics doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. Some boundaries don’t let light pass.
