As EYFS Teachers, we know that Oracy matters. We know that communication is one of the foundation blocks for learning and we know that building talk is important in supporting this. But, I know, that no one ever really showed me what that looks like when stood in a busy classroom, children moving between provision, and everyone is trying to make the most of every moment without stopping the flow of play. So it ends up feeling like something separate, that you should be doing… but aren’t quite sure where it fits in an already packed timetable. And this is where most of us get stuck, we start with good intentions, but before you know it, that 10 minutes a day becomes 2 and then it’s missing 4 days out of 5. But oracy isn’t another carpet input to plan for. It’s sustained across the provision and embedded in the routines Whether that’s in the noticing, the modelling, the interactions, the conversations. And this is exactly what @thedyslexicleader and I have been working on. We wanted to build something that helps you see what to say, when to step in, and how to use talk to actually move learning forward… without adding more to your day. 🌟 Learning, reflecting, and adapting for inquiry! 🌟 After yesterday’s inspiring session with @trev_mackenzie , I decided to revisit one of my favourite classroom adaptations — the Triangle Question Routine. Last year I studied Trevor’s latest book and chose this routine for my #pyp1 class. It became part of our question culture, helping my young learners give deeper focus to their questions and understand their power in driving inquiry. 🎥 In this short video, I share details. That’s gold for vocabulary, articulation, listening, and confidence.⁠ ⁠ Why the outdoors helps S&L⁠ ⁠ -Rich vocabulary: real textures, sounds, and actions spark precise words (squelch, sway, perch, damp).⁠ -Naturally noisy = naturally expressive: learners project their voice, vary pace/volume, and practise turn-taking.⁠ -Motivation to talk: authentic tasks (build, map, hunt, sort) make speaking/listening essential—not optional.⁠ -Inclusion: movement + visuals support EAL pupils and children with SLCN to join in.⁠ ⁠ --Quick wins to try this week⁠ Word Hunts: give 6 target words (e.g., under, rough, between, balance, compare, predict). Children find real examples and report back in full sentences.⁠ ⁠ -Talk Trail: set 4 stations; at each, a prompt: Describe… Compare… Explain… Persuade… Record on a tablet or partner scribe.⁠ -Boss & Builder: in pairs, one gives step-by-step instructions to build a simple structure; swap roles and reflect on clarity.⁠ -Sound Collections: collect outdoor sounds (rustle, drip, crow) and rehearse onomatopoeia + sentence starters.⁠ -Treasure Tell: find an object, then do a 30-second “show & tell” using who/what/where/when/why.⁠ ⁠ --Tips to make a start⁠ -Plan the language, not just the task: pre-teach 6–8 target words + sentence frames (e.g., I noticed… because…).⁠ -Model first: give a crisp example of a good instruction/explanation; keep a visual cue card.⁠ -Build talk partners: assign roles (Speaker, Listener, Summariser) and rotate.⁠ -Capture evidence fast: voice notes or quick tally of target words used.⁠ Finish with 2-minute debrief: Which word did you use today? Who helped you clarify?⁠ “Outside” isn’t just movement—it’s meaningful talk in action.
