This was one of those rare underwater moments you don’t expect.
A feather starfish suddenly lifted off the reef and swam straight toward me, gliding just above the sand like something out of a sci-fi movie.
Most people think starfish crawl — but this one took flight.
Raw, natural, and completely unplanned.
Fun Facts about Feather Starfish (Crinoids)
Feather starfish aren’t true starfish — they’re called crinoids and are more closely related to sea urchins.
They can swim by waving their arms, often to escape predators.
Each arm is covered in tiny sticky feet used to catch plankton from the water.
They’re mostly active at night, making daytime swimming a rare sight.
Fossils show crinoids have existed for over 480 million years.
When threatened, they can drop an arm and regrow it later.
