You know that feeling when someone says … “I’m fine, everything’s good” and it’s so clear they are NOT fine?! How unsettling that feels? How yucky and uncomfortable? Now imagine the person saying that is the one person you are completely dependent upon for survival? It’s no longer just uncomfortable and unsettling, it’s terrifying. Something feels very wrong and everyone is ignoring it. As a neurodivergent woman I spent a lifetime abandoning myself. Masking Camouflaging Suppressing my needs Denying my desires Pretending I was fine when I was barely coping Disconnected from myself And living in survival mode No one noticed No one knew Everyone thought I was doing “just fine” Until my emotionally gifted PDA child was born. With a highly attuned “bullshit meter” meter. She knew something was very wrong. She felt the disconnect in my system. And despite all my best efforts, she didn’t feel safe in the world. She needed to feel authenticity from me first. She needed me to reconnect with myself. To be honest about my needs and my feelings and my experience of life. I needed to build my own inner safety so that I could extend that to her. For a PDA child, whose nervous system is wired to detect threat with extraordinary sensitivity, this matters more than any strategy. You can lower every demand You can use all the right language You can do everything the books say And if your own nervous system is running on depletion, disconnection, and fear, your child feels it. Exquisitely attuned and highly sensitive. These children know when something is up. This is why I don’t start with strategies when I support PDA parents. I start with how you authentically feel. ↓ I’m creating something for PDA parents built entirely around this. Because we’re not meant to rebuild this safety alone. Scientists were busy arguing whether PDA even exists. Meanwhile, you were at home trying behavior charts, reward systems, and stricter consequences — and being told to try harder when none of it worked. Nobody was studying what *actually* helps PDA families. Scientifically. In a peer-reviewed journal. Until now. 👩‍💻 In 2025, researchers at the University of Michigan Medical School published the first-ever peer-reviewed study on a parent support program designed specifically for families of PDA children and teens. Here’s what they found: → 85% of enrolled parents completed the full 12-week program → Statistically significant improvements in 10 of 13 parent health measures — including anxiety, depression, stress, anger, sleep, and caregiver strain → Significant reduction in demand avoidance behaviors in children → 90% of parents reported improved mental health, greater confidence, and a better relationship with their child → 81% said their connection with their child improved These weren’t only self-reported impressions. They were also measured using PROMIS, Neuro-QoL, and NIH Toolbox — the same validated clinical instruments used in major medical trials. The research just caught up to what you already knew. 💬 Comment SCIENCE and we’ll DM you a link to the full study. — 📄 Full citation: Carlozzi, N. E., Lombard, W. L., Troost, J. P., Graves, C. Both of our boys have PDA, and if you’ve ever tried to communicate with someone who has Pathological Demand Avoidance, you’ll know that the usual parenting advice simply doesn’t work. PDA brains experience everyday demands as pressure - and pressure triggers anxiety, overwhelm, and shutdowns. n this video I’m snaring the simple communication shifts thaf make a huge meone 9,902 542 calm when their/nervous system goes into defence mode. It’s not the big moments that people imagine. It’s the constant awareness. The adjusting. The exhausting hyper vigilance. The holding things together before they unravel. When you’re parenting a child with a PDA profile, you’re not just responding to behaviour… you’re supporting a nervous system that can shift quickly, often without warning. And that means your day is built around reducing pressure, preventing overwhelm, and trying to keep things steady — even when you’re running on empty yourself. This is the part that’s often missed. Or misunderstood. So I created a guide to put it into words properly — what it actually feels like to be a PDA parent carer, and what families are really navigating behind the scenes. It’s free and it’s ready to share with friends, family and professionals when you might be lacking the capacity to explain yet again what life is really like as a PDA parent carer. If you want a copy, comment NEWS and I’ll send it over 💬 #pdaparenting #pda #autism #parentcarer #send

Trying to force a round plate into a square space... so instead we smash it into pieces to make it fit Sometimes that’s what school can feel like for neurodivergent children. “Be quiet.” “Sit still.” “Make eye contact.” “Just comply.” When the system can’t flex, the child is expected to. And too often, that means breaking parts of who they are just to fit in. #neurodivergentkids #sendsupport #AutismAwareness #pdaparenting #askellie

Low demand parenting. Seems to be quite the controversy over socials as of late... Interestingly enough, the narrative against it comes from non PDA circles, 'professionals' who have no lived experience with PDA, or muppets who are just trying to sell books based on information they've gathered from a single 12 week study, where even blind Freddy could see that the data is insufficient to provide factual results. 🫠 Let me be the real life study here. 14 years of data. If I didn't adopt low demand, and make safety, choices, and autonomy priority... I don't even know if my family would be alive today. Low demand parenting doesn't magically fix things, it also doesn't work in 12 weeks, it's not a get better quick scheme, it's a life long commitment, a conscious choice to do better. To involve your child in decision making, collaborate with them, understand them, make them feel seen and heard and most importantly, SAFE. It's not us giving in, it's not letting our child do whatever the fk they want. Its allowing our children's nervous systems to rest, so that they can make good choices, so they can learn and grow and thrive, not just push through, be told 'well this is the real world', and grow up like myself with a broken nervous system from decades of people pleasing, ignoring my body and brain cues screaming out that I needed rest, chronic anxiety, depression and PTSD and now, severe burnout which I just can't seem to get out of no matter how much I try. If you are new to this space, I want you to know that you are seen and safe here.. there is so much conflicting information out there on PDA, and whilst I would never tell anyone how to parent their children, I would highly suggest listening to actual PDA voices, not just accounts who have their own narrative for whatever reason. If you’re a burnt out autism or special needs mum, you need support that works with the body. As a somatic practitioner, I help mums start shifting the nervous system patterns that keep them stuck in survival mode, burnout, and reactivity. Because when your internal state changes, your capacity changes. You feel steadier. You come down faster after stress. You stop feeling like every hard moment is going to take you out. That is the work inside AMP. And my circles are there for mums who want gentle ongoing support to keep building that change over time. Comment AMP and I’ll send you info on both. #carerburnout #autismmum #specialneedsparenting #senmum #pdaparenting
