Seeing the devastating impact, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice went to President George W. Bush and asked him how the U.S. could help. The president and his administration worked hand-in-hand with a Democratically controlled Congress to come up with a bold, bipartisan plan to curb the AIDS epidemic. Susan Collins (R-ME), the chair of the Appropriations Committee, appeared skeptical on Wednesday of the Trump administration’s proposal to claw back $9.4 billion in already approved funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting. She said she was particularly concerned about the request to cut $400 million in funding for PEPFAR, the AIDS-fighting program that has saved more than 26 million lives since being launched in 2003 under President George W. Bush. “Cutting funding now — funding that is aimed at preventing disease transmission — would be extraordinarily ill-advised and shortsighted,” she said. Call volume keeps rising, a hopeful sign that awareness is growing. Continued funding in the HHS budget is good news, even as access gaps remain. 🔹 Global HIV funding held the line. In a rare bipartisan move, Congress preserved $400M for PEPFAR—a U.S. program that’s saved 26 million lives from HIV and AIDS and allowed 7.8 million babies to be born healthy to mothers living with HIV. 🔹 Heart attacks are no longer the leading cause of death in the U.S. That title now belongs to chronic heart conditions, but it’s still a milestone. A nearly 90% drop in heart attack deaths over the last 50 years shows what public health, medicine, and prevention can do together. 🔹 Gene therapy restored hearing in children and young adults born deaf. A new clinical trial showed major improvement for those with OTOF-related deafness—sometimes to near-normal levels. This breakthrough is a sign of what’s possible for treating other forms of hearing loss. There’s a lot going on right now, and sometime seeing positive stories like these can help keep us all grounded.
