The story of PK begins when a humanoid alien, played by Aamir Khan, lands in Rajasthan on a research mission. Immediately upon his arrival, a local man steals his remote control—the only device that can summon his spaceship—leaving him stranded in a world he doesn’t understand. Because he is from a planet where people communicate through touch and don't wear clothes, he is completely bewildered by human customs. He eventually learns the local Bhojpuri language by holding hands with a woman for hours to "download" her memories and vocabulary. While wandering through Delhi, his eccentric behavior and constant questions lead people to ask if he is "Pee-kay" (drunk), which becomes his name. When he asks how to find his stolen remote, everyone tells him that only "God" can help. This sets PK on a desperate quest to find God; he tries every religion, follows every ritual, and visits every temple, mosque, and church, but he remains confused by the conflicting rules and "managers" of religion. He eventually meets Jaggu, a heartbroken journalist who recently returned from Belgium after a misunderstanding caused her to think her Pakistani boyfriend, Sarfaraz, had abandoned her. Jaggu is intrigued by PK’s story and decides to help him. They discover that PK’s stolen remote is now in the possession of a powerful and fraudulent godman named Tapasvi Maharaj, who claims the device is a piece of a divine relic. PK uses his outsider’s logic to challenge Tapasvi, famously arguing that the godman is dialling a "wrong number" by giving people false advice in the name of God. This sparks a massive public debate, leading to a live television confrontation. During the climax, PK proves that Tapasvi’s "divine" predictions are wrong by revealing the truth about Sarfaraz’s letter from years ago—it turns out Sarfaraz never abandoned Jaggu; he was waiting for her all along. With his remote finally returned, PK prepares to leave Earth. Although he has fallen in love with Jaggu, he realizes she belongs with Sarfaraz and chooses to keep his feelings a secret, lying to her that the tapes he is taking back to his planet contain Earth’s sounds, when they actually only contain her voice.
