🔴 We’ve normalised wearing polyester so much… we don’t even question it anymore. But here’s the truth polyester is basically plastic. And when you wear it daily, your skin is in constant contact with synthetic fibers that don’t breathe, trap heat, and can even release microplastics. Over time, this can lead to skin irritation, allergies, excessive sweating, and discomfort. And when your skin can’t breathe, it affects more than just how you feel it impacts your overall health. What’s more concerning is that every wash releases microplastics into water systems, which eventually come back to us through food, water, and air. This isn’t about completely eliminating it overnight, but becoming more aware of what we wear daily. Choosing natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or hemp can make a real difference for your body and the planet. Because what you wear shouldn’t silently harm you or the planet. Save this and share with your fam. 🌿 #SustainableFashion #SayNoToPolyester #ConsciousLiving #SlowFashion [polyster is plastic, stop wearing synthetic fabrics, what to wear for better health, fast fashion problem, plastic waste, plastic is not for skin, natural alternatives]

Bye-bye microplastics shedding into my skin. Polyester, nylon, and most “performance” fabrics are plastic. When we wear them, they shed microplastics and can release chemical additives onto our skin. I used to live in activewear, but once I learned what it was doing to my body (and the planet), I couldn’t unsee it. clean fabrics only from here on out. your skin is your largest organ. what touches it matters.

POV: you realise most activewear is literally plastic. Polyester, nylon, elastane - the fabrics used in most gym clothes - are petroleum-based and processed with insane amounts of chemicals like phthalates, bisphenols and PFAS (“forever chemicals”), many of which are known endocrine disruptors. When we wear, wash and sweat in these fabrics they shed microplastics. These particles are now being found in human blood, lungs and even plaque in our arteries. We now know that individuals with microplastic buildup have 4.5 times greater risk for stroke and heart attack. And yet we wear these materials tight on our skin while exercising, when our body temperature and absorption are highest. I’m not saying throw everything away overnight - but it did make me rethink what I wear the most. I’m slowly switching to natural fibre activewear where possible (organic cotton, merino, etc). I’ve included some of my personal favourites but drop your non-toxic activewear recs in the comments.

1.) Polyester sports bras & leggings The Center for Environmental Health tested popular sports bras and found BPA up to 22x the safe limit. BPA mimics estrogen and is linked to hormone disruption, fertility issues, and PCOS. These chemicals transfer into your body faster under heat and sweat — exactly when you’re working out. ⭐️Instead, I look for GOTS-certified organic cotton, hemp, or merino wool. 2.) “Moisture-wicking” anything That label usually means the fabric was treated with BPA or PFAS. Over 8,000 chemicals are used to produce modern fabrics. If it says moisture-wicking, stain-resistant, or wrinkle-free — something was added. ⭐️Instead, I choose untreated natural fibers. Merino wool wicks moisture on its own. 3.) Synthetic underwear & socks BPA in polyester socks has been found at up to 31x the legal safety limit. Phthalates don’t bond to fabric — they sit on the surface and absorb through your skin all day. ⭐️Instead, I wear OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton or wool. 4.) “Water-resistant” & “stain-resistant” clothing These finishes almost always contain PFAS — “forever chemicals” your body cannot break down. They build up in your fat tissue for years and are linked to thyroid issues, fertility problems, and reduced immunity. ⭐️Instead, I skip the chemical coatings and look for brands that are specifically PFAS-free. 5.) Fast fashion When ultra-fast-fashion children’s clothing was tested, 1 in 5 items had elevated lead, PFAS, or phthalates. One toddler jacket had nearly 20x the safe lead limit. A chemist called it “hazardous waste.” ⭐️Instead, I look for two certifications: GOTS and OEKO-TEX Standard 100. No certification = I don’t know what’s in it. Reach for organic cotton, linen, silk, wool, cashmere. Your skin is your largest organ. You wear clothes 16+ hours a day. We read food labels and check skincare ingredients — but most of us have never looked at what’s touching our skin while we sleep, sweat, and live. I started paying attention to what I eat decades ago. Now I’m paying attention to what I wear 🤍

The abayas no longer aligned with me. For a long time, polyester was convenient. Easy. Accessible. But the more I learn about fabrics, breathability, and long-term quality, the more I realize I want something different. So I’m clearing space. Physically and mentally. And giving these pieces a new home instead of letting them collect dust. - #muslimtiktok #islam #abaya #hijab #ramadan
