Many recall Prince as a musical genius, but he was also a business revolutionary who spent decades fighting for what most artists still don't have: ownership. When Warner Bros. refused to give him control of his masters, he wrote "SLAVE" on his face and performed on national television. He changed his name, started his own label, and told Rolling Stone in 1996, "If you don't own your masters, your master owns you." He also used his platform to advocate for Black communities. After Freddie Gray's death in 2015, he released "Baltimore" and threw a free Rally 4 Peace concert, donating proceeds to youth charities. He gave $1 million to the Harlem Children's Zone. He quietly sent money to Trayvon Martin's family. He collaborated on #YesWeCode — an initiative to get low-income Black youth into tech. And on the 2015 Grammy stage, he looked the industry in the face and said: "Like books and Black lives, albums still matter." 100 million records. 39 studio albums. 27 instruments on his debut. On March 15, 2004, at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne took the stage with Steve Winwood and George Harrison's son Dhani to perform "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", then Prince emerged from the shadows. It almost didn't happen: George Harrison's widow, Olivia, initially wanted the performance limited to people who knew George and Prince later claimed he had never even heard the song before it was sent to him to learn. Organizers persuaded Olivia to let him play. They never really rehearsed it. Prince simply assured the producer everything would be fine and told him to let the other guitarist take the first solo, while he would handle the extended outro. What followed was pure legend. Prince fell backwards over the monitors into the crowd a stagehand there to catch him, and was gently pushed back to the bandstand, his torrid exploration on the guitar never stopping for a single second. Then he tossed his guitar into the air… and it seemingly never came down. Tom Petty said it best: "You could feel the electricity of 'something really big's going down here.'"
