WIA powerful example of how first impressions can be deceiving. Here we are at the pristine Kure Atoll in the remote pacific, a critical refuge for imperial wildlife, including the stunning black-footed albatross. This revealing footage comes from the amazing Island stewards working to protect this irreplaceable and delicate ecological wonderland: @kureatollconservancy At first glance, it appears right as rain, these nesting birds live so remotely, they have no fear of predators, which is why one of the conservancy biologist are able to carefully approach it to ensure that the albatross and its nest are healthy. But then we discover the dirty truth underneath. literally plastic trash, beneath the unaware parent. There is so much trash in our oceans, that albatross unwittingly integrated the plastic garbage into their ground nests. That trash, then ends up either in them or even worse in the bellies of their babies. Often times scientists will go through and palpate the babies to get them to regurgitate up the plastic trash like fishing line, strapping, bags, fishing nets, etc. Shockingly, 70% of all coastal and marine birds have plastics inside them! We dump 10 billion pounds of plastic trash into our oceans annually! I'm thankful that folks like Kure Conservancy are on the front lines, saving our wild legacy! we can do better!
