I paused before responding — because growth teaches you to check in with yourself before saying yes out of habit. Unfortunately, I can’t take on any unpaid work to help someone else make money at this time. And I truly mean it when I say thank you for thinking of me. I declined, respectfully. Less than 24 hours later, they followed up asking for my content creation rates. Here’s the reminder I wish every creator heard sooner: Brands do have budgets. Content creation is real work. And choosing yourself doesn’t burn bridges — it builds standards. If you’re a content creator or influencer finding your footing: • It’s okay to start with gifted collaborations • It’s okay to grow into paid partnerships • It’s always okay to honor your time, creativity, and audience The right brands will never make you feel small for asking to be paid. They’ll meet you with respect. Know your worth. Protect your peace. Let’s talk about “exposure” for a second. Brands love to offer it. Creators are told to accept it. But here’s what exposure actually means: “We see value in your work, but we don’t want to pay for it.” Because if they didn’t see value, they wouldn’t reach out in the first place. When a brand offers you “exposure,” here’s what they’re really asking: ❌ Create content for free (hours of work) ❌ Edit and post it to your audience (the asset YOU built) ❌ Give them access to your reach (which they’d pay thousands for in ads) ❌ Do it all for the “opportunity” to be associated with them But here’s the thing: Exposure doesn’t pay rent. Exposure doesn’t cover equipment costs. Exposure doesn’t compensate your time. You know what does? Money. If a brand has a marketing budget (and they all do), they can allocate it to creators. They pay for ads. They pay for billboards. They pay for PR agencies. But when it comes to creators, suddenly it’s “sorry, no budget—but think of the exposure!” Here’s my rule: If you have an engaged audience (even 5K followers), your work has value. Charge for it. “Exposure” is only valuable when YOU decide to give it for free strategically—not when a brand expects it as standard. Know your worth. Set your boundaries.
