YUIf you ever want to incorporate scale patterns into your paper quilling creations, here are a few tips:
👉Use a light colour for the background — whether you paint it, colour it with pencils or markers, or glue down a coloured paper as a base layer. This helps create more visual interest when the background peeks through the scales.
👉If you’ve coloured the background, try using similar colour hues for the edge-glued scales as well. For example, if your background is light blue, use various shades of blue paper for the scales placed on top — this will create balance and cohesion. You can still incorporate more contrasting colours for some of the scales, but these should play a secondary role, adding interest while preserving a coherent colour story.
👉Probably obvious, but important: use heavy paper strips for the edge-glued scales — ideally 180gsm and above. Lightweight paper is too flimsy to stand on its edge as a single scale segment.
👉Curve, and even slightly over-curve, your heavy paper segment into a semicircle shape. Curved paper tends to relax and “un-curve” a little as it tries to return to its original form, so overcompensating slightly can be helpful.
👉A very useful tip: use either an instant glue of your choice or very thick PVA that is almost on the verge of drying out. This will significantly reduce the time needed for each scale segment to attach and help minimize any unwanted un-curving of the semicircle shape.
👉Vary the size of the scales, gradually decreasing their size toward narrower or smaller areas — this is how it happens in nature, and we are simply observing and following that logic.
👉Large areas of pure scale texture can start to feel monotonous, so feel free to break them up with other design elements such as rolled circles, coils, or anything else that feels right to you.
