Nowruz Mubarak to all my Bawaji Followers I know I upset a few in our Parsi community by sharing a video showing the sanctity of the fireplace. But honestly, it’s time to shift our perspective. We shouldn’t live with fear that ‘something bad will happen’ if our traditions are shown. Our faith is about sanctity, not secrecy. It’s about time we open up, become inclusive, and even embrace conversion —because growth, not restriction, is what keeps any community alive. As I study history more deeply in my PhD, I realize how misunderstood some of our practices have become. Even Zarathustra himself was preaching and converting people to Zoroastrianism. The reason we stopped conversions in India goes back to the promise our priests made to King Jadi Rana — that we would not convert locals when we sought refuge. Over time, this specific promise turned into a rigid belief that Zoroastrianism allows no conversions at all. This mindset, though rooted in respect for our past and to keep the purity , is now holding us back and contributing to the community’s decline. As a community, we should rethink — not only about conversion but also about inclusivity. Why not open dummy Atash Behrams (symbolic fire temples) for those of other faiths who wish to experience and connect with the sanctity of our prayers and fire? Our heritage grows when it is shared, not when it is locked away. It’s time we move from fear to openness, and from survival to revival. What’s your take on this ? #navroz #nowruz #parsi #parsinewyear #parsiwork #parsi #persian #persiancatstagram #iranissafe #i̇ran #india #udwada #pateti #parsijokes #parsicuisine

Can you guess which community has the highest density of wealth concentration and highest billionaire density in the world? The most extraordinary entrepreneurial phenomena of not just India but the world is the Parsi community, which literally has the highest density of billionaires for any community in the world... There are just about 50,000 Parsis in India... and they are per capita the most economically advanced community of India... with 1 billionaire for every ~10,000 community members The Poonawalas, the Mistry’s, Godrej, Wadia and the Tatas... Originally immigrants from Iran, the Parsis initially settled in Sanjan area of Gujarat, and gradually moved to Surat and Mumbai... They started off as weavers, doing embroidery and even carpentry... and gradually transitioned into administrative roles as tax collectors and naval captains during the Portuguese rule over Surat... By 1824, half of all residential properties in the port city of Surat were owned by Parsis... Such that they used their wealth and naval experience to start cotton trade during the British rule, moved to Mumbai, and literally initiated every major industry in India... - India’s first cotton mill - First Indian owned bank - the Central Bank of India - First Indian steel plant - TISCO (1907) - First Indian airline - Tata Airlines (1932) - First Indian luxury hotel - Taj Mahal Palace Hotel (1903) - India’s nuclear program - Homi Bhabha - First Indian stock broking operations Such that by the mid-20th century, Parsis held monopolistic control over half the factories in the Mumbai port area... Look beyond the Tatas... the Serum Institute has vaccinated 1 in every 2 children worldwide... Godrej group, again, is the largest real estate developer of India... By the 19th century, Parsis led all Indian communities in English education under colonial rule... and this produced India’s first modern lawyers, doctors, scientists, and engineers. #casarthakahuja

Have you ever tasted the sweet water here or passed by this historic spot without knowing its story? Tell me in the comments Hidden in the heart of Mumbai is a 300-year-old well that once became the city’s sweetest lifeline. The Bhikaji Behram Well wasn’t just a source of water it was a gathering spot for traders, a refuge during the bubonic plague, and a symbol of generosity. Built by Bhikaji Behramji when most wells had salty, undrinkable water, this sacred Parsi well continues to offer free sweet water and even tea to visitors today. While entry inside may be restricted, the spirit of sharing never stopped flowing. Every Awroz, the Parsi community gathers here to give thanks reminding us how something as simple as water can shape history, faith, and community. #MumbaiHistory #ParsiHeritage #BhikajiBehramWell...

I remember—this was maybe last to last year— we had the privilege of documenting the Navroz festival of the Parsi community here in Lucknow. That’s when I met Zarine aunty. Kind, graceful, and deeply rooted in her culture— she welcomed us into her home, shared stories, and offered us a glimpse into the traditions that make the Parsi community so rich and unique. Amidst all the conversations, she mentioned something that stayed with me—the Gara saree. Not just a piece of clothing, but a legacy. A 6-yard canvas of silk and hand embroidery—dense, detailed, and breathtaking. Each motif—birds, flowers, vines, and sometimes even the iconic Cheena Cheeni—tells a story. Some of these heirlooms are over two centuries old. And in that moment, I knew we had to document this. Zarin aunty was kind enough to share her year-long knowledge of the Parsi Gara, and we’re so grateful for that. Big thanks to everyone who helped bring this to life— and especially to @sunaeyaa, for being the heart of this visual story. If you’ve ever heard of Gara sarees, or have memories tied to one— I’d love to hear your story in the comments.

As I get off the car I step onto a neat , long strip of footpath washed by another monsoon shower in Mumbai . Lush trees line the footpath and along it , in neat plots stand two and three storeyed elegant apartment buildings mostly in the Art Deco style . It is late afternoon. Cars are parked along the footpath- there seems to be a method - and everything is quiet . I take a leisurely walk past these houses gawking at the beauty of the buildings and the neighbourhood . No broken footpaths , no shanties or stalls and to my surprise I can walk everywhere unobstructed along the footpath ! This is the Dadar Parsi Colony built as a planned neighbourhood in the 1920s by and for the Parsi community .And today, too, it is only the Parsis who are allowed to live in it . Perhaps this is why it has remained beautiful ! Bandra has similar areas for the Catholic community ( though sadly, Bandra is losing its charm - tall buildings replacing beautiful old homes ) - a good way to preserve the identity of the communities . There is a small park in the centre of the area where I am .It has elegant iron fencing that allows me to admire its verdure from the streets around it . A lone friendly cat is the only soul that greets me when I am inside it . There are no illegal salons or offices or shops anywhere. No tall buildings cutting off sunlight to its shorter neighbours. No enclosed balconies or extensions and nothing is broken or falling apart . And the trees ! So many of them , shady, tall and old . These too seem well-cared-for . No doubt the colony is as it should be and was meant to be only because of its residents . I am in love with this place . Thank you to dear @nonzz1988 and @geetika.chakravarti for taking me around ! #dadar #dadarparsicolony #parsicolony #indianheritage #indianarchitecture #mumbaiheritage #heritagebuilding #oldhomes #vintagehomestyle #mumbaitravel #mumbaidiaries #mumbaimonsoon #bombaymerijaan

Did you there is a Fire in Iran Burning for 1,500 Years? 🔥 The flame dates back to around 470 AD during the Sassanian Empire. It was first enshrined in Larestan, then moved to Aqda (kept there for ~700 years), then to Ardakan (~300 years), before finally reaching Yazd. In 1934, it was placed in its current home—the Yazd Fire Temple. Remarkably, the fire has never gone out during all these centuries, despite wars, persecution, and political upheavals. Priests have carefully tended to it day and night. The fire represents Ahura Mazda’s light and wisdom, the eternal truth that guides the universe. Unlike some religions where fire is a “god” itself, in Zoroastrianism the flame is a symbol of purity, order, and divine presence. Keeping the flame alive is seen as keeping the faith alive. It is the only Atash Behram in Iran (the rest are in India, maintained by the Parsi community). For Zoroastrians, it is a site of pilgrimage and prayer. For Iranians more broadly, it is a living symbol of pre-Islamic heritage, continuity, and cultural resilience.

A Tribute to My Mother – Lily Rusi Mistry (12.8.1948 - 15.8.2025) On the 15th of this month, I lost my mother — my greatest hero, my anchor, and the most profound source of inspiration in my life. She was not just my mother, she was my guiding light. From her, I learnt the importance of having implicit faith in God, living with devotion and surrendering to the Almighty, no matter what life brings. She showed me that true strength comes from humility before Him. From her, I inherited the value of hard work — not just working, but slogging relentlessly with discipline, perseverance, and dedication. She believed there is dignity in effort, and that nothing of real worth comes without it. From her, I learnt the rare grace of giving more than receiving — to give freely in every relationship, personal or professional. That spirit of generosity is something I strive, every day, to uphold in her honor. As I reflect on my journey, I realize that whatever I am today — the man I have become, the values I hold, the person I strive to be — I owe it all to my mother. My inspiration to serve my family, my Parsi community, and my country, is rooted in the lessons she engraved into me through her words and life. The song I have chosen to share — Chaudhavi Ka Chand — was my parents’ all-time favourite. It is more than a melody; it is a piece of their love story and a reminder of the beauty and grace they brought into our lives. In these pictures are some of the most priceless moments of my life spent with her and my dad — moments of warmth, laughter and togetherness that words can’t fully capture but which my heart will carry forever. Mom, you will live on through me — in every value I uphold, in every action I take, in every prayer I say. Your love, faith and example will forever be my compass. And… as your son, I commit myself to serving the revered Atash Padshah, my community, my country, the poor, Mother Earth, water & animals. These are the things you would be proud to see from above, and I will carry them forward in your name, for as long as I live. Forever indebted, forever your son, Jimmy
