Truth: I never start a pattern by trying to do the whole thing at once. I paint each motif separately. Why? Because it makes the process way less stressful. I can focus on one little piece at a time, no pressure to get it perfect, and if something doesn’t work, it’s no big deal, it just doesn’t go in the final design. Bonus: painting motifs separately gives me total freedom when it comes time to build the repeat. Tried my hand at a seamless pattern of vegetables using acrylic paint markers 🥬🍅 It looks confusing at first, but it’s actually really simple once you follow the steps. Here’s how it works: – divide your page into 4 equal squares – draw onto the inner edges of each square (this is what makes it connect later) – rearrange the squares so the edges swap positions – fill in the gaps that appear in the center – repeat the process until you have a seamless pattern I feel like this could live beyond the page, I’m just not sure where yet. Where could you see this pattern being used? The truth is you'll never feel ready and you'll keep saying "someday". I sat at our kitchen table and taught myself to paint. It wasn't pretty but I loved creating and I was finally listening to what was stirring inside me. If you would have told me then in 2022 that I'd be living out creative dreams I didn't even know were possible I would have pointed to the ugly marks on my cheap watercolor paper and said yeah right.
