_SLondon Mayor Sadiq Khan has just given the final approval for the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street. The proposal, which received support from two-thirds of respondents in a recent public consultation, involves transforming the area into a traffic-free zone to enhance its appeal for shopping, leisure, and outdoor events.
Major retailers such as Selfridges, John Lewis, and Ikea have endorsed the initiative, highlighting its potential to attract more visitors and boost economic activity. The pedestrianisation is expected to address challenges faced by the street, including the rise of online shopping and the proliferation of low-quality retail outlets.
To implement the transformation, the Mayor plans to establish a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC), which would oversee the redevelopment efforts. This approach allows the project to proceed despite previous objections from Westminster City Council, which had concerns about traffic displacement and local governance.
The MDC’s remit would extend beyond the pedestrianised section, encompassing adjacent areas to ensure a comprehensive revitalisation strategy. The government has expressed support for the plan, viewing it as a means to stimulate investment, create jobs, and enhance London’s global standing.
While the initiative has garnered widespread backing, some stakeholders have raised concerns about potential traffic congestion resulting from rerouted buses and taxis. Detailed proposals addressing these issues, including plans for alternative transport routes and accessibility measures, are expected to be released later this year.
