One of the hardest parenting moments is hearing your child was left out. That drop in your chest is real. The urge to fix it fast makes sense. But what often matters more than solving the social problem is how your child experiences you in that moment.   Being left out is not a sign your child is failing socially. It’s part of learning how relationships work. What sticks long term is whether they feel safe bringing that pain to you without being rushed, dismissed, or rescued.   Before responding, take a breath. Notice your own feelings, anger, sadness, confusion, and try not to lead with them. Start with open-ended questions to understand how your child felt and how they handled it. Then problem-solve together.   If school friendships feel shaky, help widen their world. “Are there friends outside of school you’d like to see?” “Should we plan a play date?” This reminds them connection isn’t limited to one lunch table.   It also matters to say this clearly. Being left out hurts, and it does not define their worth. If this becomes a repeated pattern, loop in the teacher to get curious about what’s going on. And still let your child know, “I’m here with you, and we’ll figure this out together.” When kids learn they can talk through rejection with support, they build confidence that lasts far beyond the cafeteria.   If this reframed something for you, follow @pedsdoctalk or share it with a parent in the thick of school-age emotions. As a pediatrician AND a mom, I know how badly we want to hear our little ones say their first words. But sometimes, the way we try to help can actually make it harder for them! 😬 Here are some common mistakes I see and some easy tweaks to get them talking sooner: ❌ Constantly saying “Say Mama! Say Mama!” ✅I get it—we’re eager! But constant prompting can feel like pressure and doesn’t teach real communication. Babies learn best when we model language in a natural way. Instead, try statements with expression: “It’s Mama!”—this helps them hear the word in context. ❌ Rapid-fire questions like “What does the dog say? What does the cow say?” ✅ Too many questions back-to-back don’t give little brains time to process! Instead, pause and wait: “The dog goes… woof!” This builds anticipation and invites them to participate. ❌ Speaking in a flat, unengaging tone ✅ Monotone speech isn’t interesting to babies. But exaggerated tone “parentese” (that sing-songy, animated way we naturally talk to babies), and big facial expressions? That grabs their attention and makes words more meaningful! ❌ Skipping gestures and expressions ✅ Words are more than just sounds—they come alive with movement and emotion! When we act out words, like doing a big rolling motion with our hands for “The wheels on the bus go round and… (pause)” we make language fun, engaging, and easier to remember. ❌ Overcorrecting their words ✅ If your toddler says “wawa,” responding with “No, it’s water” can feel discouraging. Instead, naturally model the correct pronunciation with enthusiasm: “Yes! Water! Let’s drink some water!” This keeps the conversation positive and keeps them trying. Yes. All of this. @pedsdoctalk Sleep boundaries matter. Development matters. Parent mental health matters. None of these statements are controversial when you zoom out and look at the full picture of child development. Kids need warmth and leadership. They need support and structure. And they cannot regulate without rest. Good parenting isn’t about avoiding discomfort at all costs—it’s about guiding kids through it safely and intentionally. 👉 Comment “TPSAPP” for all sleep + parenting resources. #pedsdoctalk #parenting #sleeptraining #sleeptherapist #thepeacefulsleeper

Do you know the term maternal ambivalence? It isn’t just a buzzword—it is a real psychological/physiological thing 🖤 If you’ve ever felt frustrated, resentful, or like you just don’t love every moment of motherhood- you’re not broken. You’re human. And according to psychotherapist Dr. Margo Lowy, those dark, difficult feelings aren’t something to fix. They’re something to learn from. In this episode of @thepedsdoctalkpodcast, “The Myth of the “Perfect” Mom: Embracing Ambivalence in Motherhood,” @drmargolowy breaks down what maternal ambivalence actually means, and why it is so different from indifference. Ambivalence keeps you connected to your feelings and your child. Indifference is the shut down. And there’s a powerful difference between the two. Here’s what hit differently for me: she talks about how when we suppress our harder emotions, we’re actually teaching our children to suppress theirs too. But when we acknowledge them - even simply saying “Mom’s feeling a little overwhelmed today, I still love you, but I need a moment” - we model emotional honesty in a way that shapes how our kids will relate to their own hard feelings for the rest of their lives. Not loving every minute of motherhood doesn’t make you a bad mom. It makes you a present one - someone willing to sit with the full picture instead of performing a highlight reel. Your toddler isn’t trying to embarrass you. They’re not trying to manipulate you. They’re overwhelmed. That moment in the store, when they break down over the wrong cup? It’s not about the cup. It’s about feelings too big for their tiny body to hold. When we respond with calm, with presence, with patience, we’re teaching them something powerful: All emotions are welcome. And no emotion will push me away. 🎥: @pedsdoctalk 👉🏼 @chilld_official 👉🏼 @chilld_official 👉🏼 @chilld_official #gentleparenting #emotionalintelligence #tantrumswithlove #toddlertantrums #parentingtips #consciousparenting #momlifebelike #regulationbeforeeducation #pedsdoctalk #chilldparenting

🚨 ByHeart Recall: What Parents Need to Know We went live with @pedsdoctalk to break down the ByHeart formula recall — what happened, what to do if you used it, how to switch safely, and how to actually monitor for symptoms. ✅ 84 reported cases of infant botulism ✅ 23 babies had exposure to ByHeart formula ✅ All ByHeart powdered formula has been voluntarily recalled — regardless of lot number ✅ Symptoms to watch for: severe constipation, weak suck, excessive drooling, limpness ✅ If symptoms are present → go straight to the ER ✅ Formula is still safe. A few days ago I shared a reel on my top 5 horror stories when it comes to safety, and got many questions about my thoughts on trampolines, so let’s talk trampolines. Where would trampolines fall on my list of safety horror stories? Higher up there if not used safely. Yes, we go to trampoline parks. No, I’m not here to cancel fun. But as a pediatrician who’s seen more than a few “just one wrong landing” injuries-I want you to have the full picture. Trampolines are fun, but they’re also one of the top reasons kids end up in the ER for broken bones, sprains, and concussions. Especially when there are big kids + little kids on the same bounce zone. That “double bounce” effect? It’s real, and it’s how young kids get launched (literally) into an awkward landing. I’m not saying never go. My own son loves to bounce. But I am saying that a few simple strategies can make trampoline time a whole lot safer. 🛑 If you want to skip the ER visit and still let your kid have fun, save this, share it, and try these rules: ✔️ One kid per trampoline square ✔️ Match kids by size ✔️ Hold off until age 5 for trampoline parks ✔️ Supervise actively- meaning your eyes are up, and your phone is down At @pedsdoctalk, I’m all about real-world, evidence-based, and balanced parenting guidance-because raising kids isn’t black and white. If you’re looking for tips on child health, development, and safety that actually fit your life, make sure you’re following along. Do your kids love trampolines? Ever had a bounce turn into a scare or an injury? Share your experience. I’d love to hear how you’ve navigated the fun and the risks. Stitch with: @tudra.kids
