PHI used to worry about people staring at me, asking questions, invading my space or just acting like I’m not there while using an aid.
But I realized that the confidence I exude is where people will most often meet me.
We’re not taught how to feel like our most confident selves while our bodies change and our disability ebbs and flows.
Like most things in life, it’s not about the people around you, it’s the work we have to do to accept ourselves exactly as we are.
Finding the right mobility aid to match my ‘fabulous’ helped, but at the end of the day it’s about leaning into the power you had when making a decision to help yourself.
Being proud to be in less pain, walking taller, be able to take a deep breath, go further than you could before. That’s the slay.
