I just had my neighbor point toward me and tell me that I gained weight. She said this several times. This is something that’s happened to me a lot in the last few weeks. As someone who has struggled with body dysmorphia my whole life, hearing this statement so flippantly can feel devastating. But I’m doing the work for myself. I am taking deep breaths and recognizing that it’s okay. I have just become a dad recently. I have a disability. I have been managing chronic pain. I have gained weight, yes it’s true, and it’s okay. At one point I had been underweight and it wasn’t healthy for me, so now I’m finding my balance and where I want to stay. Part of why I do these videos where I stare at the camera is to become more comfortable with myself. To put myself at ease with who I am within any given moment. If you’re someone who is struggling with body dysmorphia. I see you and you are beautiful just how you are. And if you’re someone who wants to point out someone else’s weight gain. MORNING SUNLIGHT VIEWING IS POWERFUL WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL & PHYSICAL HEALTH • - Recently I appeared on @realtimers hosted by @billmaher to discuss zero cost behavioral practices to improve mental health and physical health. I put morning sunlight viewing (especially on overcast days) right up there with proper nutrition (eating mostly non-processed or minimally processed foods) and exercise (cardiovascular exercise and resistance training each 2-4x per week depending on your needs and schedule), as the key pillars of building and maintaining your mental and physical health, every age. Obviously getting great sleep is important too. - Bill has been talking about the importance of getting sunlight exposure for a number of years. Of course you don’t want to get a sunburn and you don’t want excessive UV exposure but as I point out this clip UV levels are pretty low early in the day and late in the day when the sun is low in the sky. - We also discussed zero cost science supported tools to reduce your stress and improve sleep, and emerging changes in scientific funding and public health discourse more generally. - Thank you Bill and team for hosting me!
