Grateful to share that I’ve received scholarship funding supporting my doctoral studies in Transdisciplinary Research at @ucalgary. This work explores a question that has been emerging across my projects for years…How do stories shape the way people make meaning — and act — when facing complex social and ecological challenges? In one context, that looks like leadership development and workplace equity through our WAGE-funded Breaking Barriers project with @lotusstemm led by Dr. Roopali Chaudhary, PhD. In another, it looks like exploring relational ways of understanding land, soil, and ecological stewardship through the (Re)mediating Soils research @re_mediating_soils led by Dr. Katherine Lawless. Excited to deepen this inquiry, which wouldn’t be possible without my supervisory committee - Dr. Lawless, Dr. Chaudhary and Dr. Patricia Johnston; the Graduate College; and the incredible TD team led by Dr. Jenny Godley. ✨ Picture taken at (Re)mediating Soils: Field Notes exhibition at the The University of Lethbridge Art Gallery. The project brings together artists, scientists, farmers, and Indigenous knowledge holders to explore how we understand and care for soil. The Global Earth Repair Convergence in-person program will be held here at the Fort Worden Historic State Park. What a beautiful space to be present in as we convene to discuss global Earth repair solutions! A great reminder that, even though there is much work to be done, there is so much beauty present to remind us what we are working for. This will be the largest gathering of grassroots restoration leaders, scientists, Indigenous voices, and practitioners to date. Our 3-year plan: Unifying and activating 300 million people in all 185 bio regions of the world to restore 1 billion hectares; helping reverse desertification, restore forests, and stabilize the climate. In other words: to repair the Earth. Let us put our heads together and our hands to the Earth. The time is now! Our planet cannot wait. This profound reflection on the 'spirits of place' hits differently. True connection to the land demands confronting the complex tapestry of its history—acknowledging the 20,000 years of presence before current settlement. It’s a powerful, necessary conversation about cultural inheritance, the painful erasure of sites like the Edina Mounds by settlers, and the commitment to honoring those lost legacies within creative work. A vital perspective on listening to the earth and its original caretakers. #SpiritsOfTheLand #PlaceMaking #IndigenousHistory #CulturalAcknowledgment #LandRelationship #DeepRoots

Recently we gathered together for an Indigenous-led workshop: Indigenous History, Cultures, and Roads to Reconciliation. Our team was guided by Laraine Hale and Rhonda Belous to explore key histories and perspectives while reflecting on how this learning applies to our work. It was the first in an internal capacity-building series designed to strengthen Indigenous-informed, culturally safe, and responsive services. More to come!

Artist Carley Rickles (@carleyrickles) works at the intersection of land, community, and the built environment. Circle of Response brings participants together in a shared investigation of place, inviting us to notice how landscapes shift, how communities gather, and how our actions reverberate through the environments we inhabit. The project asks a simple but urgent question: How do we respond to the elements around us? Tomorrow, join us for the closing reception of Boundary Layers & the third and final activation of her participatory installation “circle of response” focused on water, which she’s been collecting since the show opened in January.

There’s a lot of conversation happening right now about Indigenous Rights, Land Back, and Aboriginal Title. Unfortunately, much of what people think they know about these issues is built on myths. Understanding the facts doesn’t threaten anyone’s place here. It simply helps us to see the legal and historical reality of the land we all live on. Here are a few of the common misconceptions - and the education you need to know: 1️⃣ “Land Back means Indigenous People are going to take everyone’s homes” Land Back actually refers to restoring Indigenous jurisdiction over Crown land, public land or specific territories. It is not a movement for mass eviction of private homeowners. Modern agreements involve co-management, conservation stewards or negotiated transfers. 2️⃣ “Indigenous People already got their land through reserves” Reserves represent a tiny fraction of traditiona territories. In so-called Canada, many Nations never signed treaties or had their land legally ceded, which is why modern land title cases and treaty negotiations continue today. 3️⃣ “Indigenous People don’t pay taxes” We pay the same taxes as everyone else. Some tax exemptions exit only for certain goods or income earned on reserve, and they come from treaty obligations and federal law. 4️⃣ “Land Back is anti-settler or anti-Canadian” Most Indigenous leaders, ourselves included, describe Land Back as a pathway to shared stewardship and repairing relationships, not removing non-Indigenous people. It is about partnerships in conservation, housing, and economic development. 5️⃣ “Court cases are creating new Indigenous Rights” Courts generally say they are recognizing rights that already existed before colonization. 6️⃣ “Indigenous issues only affect Indigenous People” Decisions about land title, stewardship, and treaty rights affect environmental protection; natural resource management, housing, and economic development for everyone living on the land. Understanding Indigenous Rights isn’t about rewriting history, it’s about recognizing the history that was already there. #landback #indigenousrights #decolonize #truthandreconciliation

What do natural climate solutions look like in Treaty 9 territory? The Indigenous-owned social enterprise, Wahkohtowin Development, is leading an innovative example. In partnership with Mikro-Tek, Wahkohtowin Development is applying beneficial fungi to tree seedlings to strengthen the living network beneath the forest floor — reducing herbicide use, improving seedling survival, and creating new carbon finance revenue. At the heart of this work is a bigger vision: reinvesting in Indigenous Guardian Programs and long-term stewardship, grounded in Indigenous rights and responsibilities. 2 days after coming back after Brazil were incredibly busy. Back in the classroom with students talking Industrial Revolution, importance of research to Sovial Justixe work, and starting unit on Economic Justice and Class Consciousness. Followed by 2nd STA Exec-SD36 School board Liaison Meeting with my Local Represenfative hat on. hoping for restoration of bushes rather than continued austerity that has hurt students so very much. Thursday, prep for our Indigenous Dreams Rising Week in final stages as we started school wide #LandBack project, with creation of Lands by each class, cannot wait to see resulte as we use them for Opening ceremonies and build up our resources in the long term. Whole Indigenous Student Council members and my fellow Indigenous Dept team members handed out the lands.... I was back at BC Teachers Federation for WR Long International Solidarity Meetings.A great April Meeting of the WR Long International Solidarity Committee. Highlights from @codevcanada and our incredible Latim American partners, the work is truly never easy. Report outs from exchanges from labour work across Canada, Cuba, Columbia, Argentina, Palestine and more.... Importsnt learning on Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) from @comfront2016. A scary trade contract clause putting corporate profits over people's sovereignty. Allows foreign investors to bypass local courts and directly sue host governments. MNCs sue Latin America and SubSaharan African nations constantly. Truly dangerous and immoral. Canada doesnt like it done to us, but we fully engage and mandate it on others. the work continues over the long weekend. looking forward to sharing highlights from work in Brazil. PS: yes indeed my luggage travels more than I do. my trustworthy green carey on headed off to Cuba, stuffed full of vital goods needed to survive inhumane, illegal blockade of Cuba. the carry on has seen better days, a fitting send off, not to a landfill, but on a humanitarian mission. Cubans will survive and thrive. we can all play a part.

For 150 years, Canada created National Parks by removing the people who knew the land best. Today, we have a chance to do things differently. We often talk about nature through a settler lens—as “wilderness” to be managed. But for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people, it is home. It is a relative. The Facts: —> 80% of global biodiversity is found on lands cared for by Indigenous Peoples. —> Research shows that when Indigenous Guardians are funded to monitor their territories, they match or outperform traditional parks in protecting ecosystems. —> These programs create vital opportunities for youth to learn from Elders on their home territories. Prime Minister Carney, you cannot have a “Nature Strategy” without permanent, long-term funding for Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) and Indigenous Guardians programs. Right now, many of these projects are planning to shut down as their funding expires on March 31st. We are at risk of losing the very people who never stopped caring for this land. True reconciliation means putting Indigenous leadership at the forefront—not just as a part of the plan, but as the plan. Fund the Guardians. Fund the Strategy. @markjcarney
