When we heard that the Planetwalker was in town, we had to invite him to @wilderness.beach.house Dr John Francis is an author, traveler, banjo-player and teacher. He traveled from coast to coast across the United States, visited Antarctica, and sailed through the Caribbean all without the use of motorized travel. He is the program director for Planetwalk, a nonprofit environmental awareness organization. Planetwalk believes our behavior toward one another can be a mechanism for how we treat the Earth. John has traveled throughout much of the Americas on foot—hence his nickname, the “Planet Walker.” Currently, he is 🥾on foot in the Garden Route and our @annierensburg joined him for a day of hiking and chatting from Buffalo Bay to Knysna. In honor of Black History Month, we are celebrating Dr. John Francis, an environmentalist known as "the Planetwalker," who influenced our nation's legislation and policies on oil spill management. Dr. John Francis was moved to act after witnessing the collision of two oil tankers underneath the Golden Gate Bridge in 1971, where over half a million gallons of oil spilled into San Francisco Bay. Dr. Francis was intent on taking action to protect the environment and bring awareness, so he committed to giving up riding and driving in motorized vehicles and would later take a 17-year-long vow of silence. As he walked across the country and back again, in silence, he earned his bachelor's degree, his master's degree, and his Ph.D. Francis has continued his commitment to the environment by assisting in writing oil spill regulations, serving as the project manager for the U.S Coast Guard Oil Pollution Act Staff of 1990, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and writing about environmental issues.  #BlackHistoryMonth #environmentalist #drjohnfrancis  🎥TikTok: @earthtodeez

I had the privilege of listening to The Planet Walker, Dr. John Francis this past week in Durham, NC. After witnessing a tragic oil spill in the San Francisco Bay, he decided to abstain from riding in motorized vehicles, after a few years of vehemently defending his positions and thoughts, he decided to gift his community with a day of silence. After he completed this day, he decided it was actually a positive thing being silent. So, as he gave up motorized vehicles, he gave up speaking. In total, he didn’t speak for 17 years and didn’t use motorized vehicles for 22. During this time, he obtained a BS, Masters, and PhD. Fun fact, he even taught a discussion class, while not speaking. #planetwalker #vowofsilence #reducereuserecycle #urbanshaman
