Last night at 11 PM I joined the Upper Eastside Command Center of the El Paso Police Department for a ride along to better understand what our officers face during the late night and early morning hours. Public safety is one of my top priorities and this is exactly why I wanted to see the work firsthand. In just a few hours officers responded to a wide range of calls, including helping someone during a suicide attempt and making an arrest that took guns and cocaine off our streets. Thank you Officer Perez and the entire El Paso Police Department for your dedication to keeping our community safe.

Las Cruces police are launching a voluntary camera registry program called “Flock,” designed to help investigators quickly locate video evidence after a crime. Residents can sign up and place their cameras on a map—no special equipment required—and officers will only request footage if needed. Police say the system does not give them direct access to your cameras, and sharing footage is always optional. But similar programs nationwide have raised concerns. Investigations have found that federal agencies, including ICE, have accessed Flock data in some cases, and reports also suggest some footage has been reviewed by overseas contractors—prompting questions about privacy and oversight. Supporters say it’s a powerful crime-fighting tool. Critics say the safeguards matter just as much as the technology. As a council member, I carry the responsibility of considering how every decision impacts the real lives and safety of the people I represent. In District 1, Flock Cameras helped @eppolice identify a fugitive connected to a shooting — a reminder that these policies are not abstract debates, but tools that can directly affect the safety of our neighborhoods. While I respect and value concerns about privacy, I also have to weigh the real impact crime has on families who deserve to feel safe in their community. My role is to represent the whole community and make decisions that balance civil liberties with the responsibility to protect our residents. That is why I did not support this item.

El Paso County leaders say the El Paso Promise program is focused on a simple idea: help people change direction before they end up stuck in the justice system. During a presentation to county commissioners, officials explained that many participants come into the program without a high school diploma. For many, the first step is earning a GED through partners like the Ysleta Community Learning Center, followed by job training and certification programs through organizations including Project ARRIBA and the Center for Employment Training. Some of those certification programs are offered at no cost, while others may require financial aid or have small out-of-pocket expenses for things like transportation or supplies. Program partners may also provide assistance to help participants cover those needs. The program also connects participants with additional support services—like food assistance, housing resources, and recovery support—to help stabilize their lives while they work toward education and employment. Supporters say the goal is to break the cycle that can keep people moving in and out of jail. If participants finish school, gain job skills, and find steady work, county leaders say the benefits could extend beyond public safety—strengthening families, the workforce, and the local economy. The program is now expanding into its next phase, opening services to people over the age of 28—something officials say addresses a major need in the community.
