MAHOW TO BE HAPPY AS AN ARCHITECT ⬇️
This is the real reason why a lot of Gen Z architects are unhappy with the profession.
And more importantly: how to fix it.
I’m Maria, Master’s architecture student at Politecnico di Milano, working in practice.
Most frustration doesn’t come from architecture itself, it comes from a mismatch between expectations and reality.
Here’s what’s going wrong, and how to counteract it:
1. We were taught to chase passion, not sustainability
Many enter architecture expecting fulfillment to compensate for low pay and long hours.
Fix: Treat architecture like a profession, not a calling. Learn how fees, roles, and value creation work early.
2. We equate overwork with commitment
Burnout is normalized instead of questioned.
Fix: Set boundaries during studies. Optimize workflows, not hours. Skill growth should not require exhaustion.
3. We expect school to prepare us for practice
Graduation often comes with a reality shock.
Fix: Actively bridge the gap through internships, competitions, and real-world constraints while still studying.
4. We wait for validation instead of building agency
Students look for permission, from professors, studios, institutions.
Fix: Apply early, share work publicly, ask questions. Agency reduces anxiety.
5. We think dissatisfaction means failure
Many believe being unhappy means they chose the wrong path.
Fix: Reframe discomfort as feedback. Architecture careers are flexible, adjust direction, don’t quit silently.
Gen Z isn’t “too sensitive.”
The profession is changing, and expectations need to change with it.
