PLPresident William Ruto faces political pressures from both Rigathi Gachagua and the opposition duo of Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino, though the nature of the challenges differs.
Gachagua, a former deputy president impeached amid political controversy, has focused on his regional base in Mt. Kenya and currently leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP). Analysts note that his influence is largely regional, and legal barriers may limit his ability to hold office or contest for office. Ruto has also worked to counter Gachagua by fostering rivalries within his political base.
In contrast, Sifuna, Nairobi Senator, and Owino, Embakasi East MP, are consolidating a youth-driven, cross-ethnic opposition movement with national reach. During the Linda Mwananchi Tour in Kitengela and Kakamega, the duo mobilized large, organic crowds under slogans such as "Sisi Ndio Sifuna" and "Babu Kwa Sababu." Observers say their grassroots networks, particularly in Nairobi, allow them to operate independently of traditional political structures and maintain momentum despite police scrutiny.
Sifuna and Owino also lead the "WANTAM" campaign, which seeks to block Ruto’s re-election, and have brought together over 70 legislators through the Kenya Moja Alliance. Analysts say their ability to engage urban youth on issues such as governance, corruption, and cost of living could translate into significant political influence ahead of the 2027 polls.
The contrast between the two challenges is clear: Gachagua’s influence is concentrated and predictable, largely tied to regional and legacy politics, while Sifuna and Owino represent a dispersed, generational movement with broader national resonance.
