VASirga drinking water usually seems to be popular posts 😊 There have been many comments about why I don’t bring a bowl for her along? would that now be easier? Waste less water? The answers are these: Sirga tends to break bowls, she even bites holes into the stainless steel ones. That’s just a waist of good bowls and not good for her teeth. There are always some empty bottles around and before they get thrown away we can recycle them in this way and when she destroys them it’s not bad for her teeth. We pump around 20.000 liters of water per day for wildlife. Even though we live in a desert, the few liters that gets spilled when Sirga gets bottle fed once every few weeks don’t make a difference and we have enough water for it. Also, the less things I can carry with me the better and the plastic bottle is just easy, I can close it, throw it in the back of the car and use it whenever needed - often it’s just my own water bottle that I use the feed her with. Lastly, Sirga has a permanent waterhole inside her 1 ha enclosure which she shares only with a lot of birds, additionally she has a large waterhole out in her reserve where she shares it with a few hundred other mammals that come to drink there. The water bottle feeding is just something I do to give her a drink when she is far away from the water sources and I see she is thirsty, usually when it’s very hot or when she has prey somewhere and spends a few days protecting her food 😊 #sirgathelioness

As we wrap things up, I’m sharing my top 5 most popular posts of the year. This one came in at #5— it can be a tough video to watch but I’m so thankful it has helped promote awareness about breath-holding spells so other parents know what to look out for, and what to do it one occurs.
We see breath-holding spells in young children, typically ages 6 months to 6 years, and they can be scary for caregivers. They’re most common during toddlerhood and often happen during moments of anger, fear, frustration, or injury—tantrums being a common trigger.
It’s important to know that breath-holding spells are not intentional. Your toddler is not doing them purposefully. They’re a reflex—a response to an emotional trigger.
What to do during an episode:
✅ Lay your child flat to promote blood flow.
✅ Gently blow on their face while speaking to them.
✅ Confirm it’s not choking (choking begins suddenly and may involve a “deer in headlights” look, whereas breath-holding spells follow a long cry).
Episodes last under a minute, and color/breathing should return after. Talk to your clinician to confirm the diagnosis and discuss next steps, like checking for iron-deficiency anemia or ruling out seizures.
