Potatoes are one of the most forgiving crops you can grow. Plant seed potatoes in a trench, then as the plants grow keep mounding soil or straw up around the stems. Each time you bury the stem, the plant sends out more tubers underground. It’s simple, low-effort, and one small bed can produce pounds of food. If you’re planning a garden this spring, don’t skip potatoes. What’s your favorite variety to grow? 🥔🌱 #growfood #growyourownfood #gardenersofinstagram #potatogarden #springgarden

#potatoes Who doesn’t love a good old potato?? 🥔 Well if you love these simple tubers as much as I do, then just wait until you eat fresh ones out of your own backyard! It is absolutely life changing! Homegrown or freshly harvested potatoes have so much more tenderness and texture to them compared to the old ones kept in a facility all winter and sold at the grocery stores. Plus they are super easy to grow! Especially if it’s your first time gardening or you haven’t had much success with a garden in the past, I would definitely recommend growing these this season. You can plant them anytime from spring through summer as long as the last spring frost is about 2 weeks away. The variety to pick determines how long they will grow for/days to harvest. After you plant them it’s as easy as watering the plants as they grow (making sure to check soil moisture by digging down 1-2 inches before watering, this prevents over/under watering which can lead to a disappointing yield), and fertilizing them 1-2 times throughout the mid and late Spring to increase soil health and fertility. If you see potatoes beginning to grow exposed on the surface you can keep covering the surface with compost/mulch to keep them from turning green. (potatoes exposed to direct sunlight turn green which makes them not ideal to eat) Then it’s just waiting until the plants begin to yellow and die back in the summer. After the entire plant has died back wait 10-14 days keeping the pots in a dry place like a porch or garage, and it’s time to see what they produced under the soil! (If growing in-ground or a raised bed that can’t be moved, you can watch for rain in the forecast and harvest a bit early to avoid the chance of them starting to rot) Additional notes: - use good potting soil or raised bed mix that has great drainage. Soggy soils will lead to the potatoes rotting in the ground. - give them full sun (6+ hours) if possible to maximize their growing potential. These plants love warmth. - make sure to keep up on watering, especially as the temperatures begin to rise in late spring and early summer! - mulch is super helpful to maintain a good level of moisture and reduce watering. . .

🌱 Running a little garden experiment this season 🥔 Pots vs raised bed — same potatoes, different setup. Which one do you think will give me more? 👀 In the past, my raised bed potato plants grew big and healthy 🌿 …but the harvest was smaller than I hoped and the potatoes weren’t very big. So I’m trying containers this time to see if it changes the yield 👀 Beginner tip: Growing potatoes in pots 🪴 • Use a large container with drainage holes • Start with a few inches of GOOD quality soil + one seed potato • As the plant grows, keep adding soil (‘hilling’) • Water more often than garden beds (pots dry out fast) • Full sun = better harvest ☀️ • Loose, rich soil = bigger, healthier potatoes 🥔 ➡️ I bought my red potato seeds and soil from my local nursery. So there were several potatoes in a bag and what I did was cut the big ones in halves. So that gave me even more future plants. Letting cut seed potatoes dry out for 1-2 days before planting allows the raw, exposed surface to “callus” or scab over. This drying process is crucial to prevent the seed piece from rotting in the soil, protecting it from moisture-related diseases and pathogens while enabling stronger, healthier growth I’ll update you at harvest time! #texas #backyardgarden #zone9bgardening #growyourownfood #gardening

Potatoes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow 🥔 - they don’t require a lot of attention and do wonderfully in grow bags. I even use grow bags in my large garden to preserve garden real estate for other spring and early summer vegetables. I like to buy seed potatoes from our local farmers’ co-op, but you can select organic (not sprayed with growth inhibitor) potatoes from your grocery store or use potatoes that might be sprouting in your pantry. To determine the best potatoes for growing, find the potato eyes. The more eyes, the more potatoes will grow from that seed potato. Place the potatoes in a bright window with the eyes facing up, and add an apple nearby to help encourage sprouting. In a couple weeks you’ll see strong shoots forming, and they’ll be ready for planting. Save this before you plant potatoes, and follow along for more simple garden skills! #potatogrowing #vegetablegarden #seedstarting #growyourownfood
