It is a time to be gentle to ourselves while focusing on a few key areas that can help make the transition easier. There are no hacks. There is no code to crack. I know people don’t always like hearing this, but menopause is not associated with weight gain. (1) Getting older is associated with weight gain and this is because lean muscle mass tends to decrease while eating habits go unchanged and activity level declines. Less activity, the same calorie intake, and less lean body mass = body fat gain. Not to mention people tend to eat less protein as they get older. When estrogen declines, many women experience low energy and less intensity in training if they do exercise. Estrogen is also an important part of building muscle mass, so that gets a little harder when estrogen levels are low. Some good news? Nothing you experience during menopause is permanent or out of your control. Resistance training works to preserve muscle mass AND build it in older women (3), this has been well researched. Calorie management still works for reducing body fat. Creatine supplementation has been linked to a reduction in symptoms and increase in lean mass (2). And best of all, older women without a lot of training history often have the best results with body recomposition programs (simultaneous fat loss and muscle gain) (4). Are things harder than when you were younger? 100%. That is not to be discounted. But don’t buy into this notion that your body breaks at menopause, it doesn’t. It just changes and you have to learn to work with it when you don’t quite feel like yourself. And for women of all ages - you will not benefit from trying to fit a beauty standard that doesn’t take health and longevity into account. Nothing says “I give a shit about myself” like having muscle on your bones. What you’re seeing here is power. And your body runs on the same principle. Electrolytes generate electrical potential inside your cells. Every cell functions like a tiny battery, and without enough charge, nothing works the way it should. Sodium is essential for hydration and oxygen transport. It pulls water into cells and helps red blood cells carry oxygen. When sodium drops, endurance drops with it, leading to weakness, fatigue, and feeling out of breath, especially after sweating or intense activity. Sodium also works with potassium to power the sodium potassium pump, which creates electrical charge inside the cell. Potassium supports nerve and muscle interaction and works alongside sodium to generate that electrical potential. When potassium is low, nerve signals and muscle activation suffer, which shows up as weakness and tiredness. Magnesium controls the absorption of sodium and potassium. It supports oxygen use and allows muscles to relax after contraction. Magnesium also helps prevent muscle cramps and is especially important for long or intense workouts. Low magnesium often leads to cramps and reduced endurance. Calcium is responsible for muscle contraction and neuromuscular excitability. It helps muscles respond to nerve signals. When calcium is low, muscle cramps, twitching, weakness, and even heart palpitations can occur. Chloride works with sodium and plays a key role in hydration. These minerals are not optional.
