RI1. I didn’t enjoy my first year of medical school - I hated moving outside of Southern California, where my friends and family were; I felt lonely and isolated, and it was a culture change for me moving outside of a city where I felt like a majority of the population - there was a time in the beginning that I questioned if I wanted to continue or not when I was super home sick.
2. I care about work life balance more than my job - I obviously love what I do and feel very grateful for this career, but it’s so easy to feel burnt out in medicine, especially when you have such little time for yourself and wellness; things are 100% better in fellowship but the training leading up to this point was extremely challenging.
3. I still have a hard time dealing with difficult patients and families, on one hand I understand where they’re coming from and the anxiety they feel about their illness; on the other I don’t like being treated in a mean and disrespectful way especially as a female physician and I still have difficulty knowing the right things to say or how to handle the situation.
4. When things get really busy and I barely have time to sit down and eat, I can’t help but feel compassion fatigue - I’m still figuring out ways to combat this but I wish I had more time to see each patient, read up on patients, place orders, write notes, and talk to ancillary staff without feeling so rushed

Honestly y’all, it doesn’t matter. I was in the @uga_collegeofag at the @universityofga and had an incredible experience.
I took poultry science, food science, and horticulture. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Choose a major that you are passionate about, just make sure that you finish your prereqs and are learning the information for the MCAT and you’ll be just fine.

NUHow I studied for the MCAT while working as a registered nurse.
This is one beast of an exam and I needed to content review for months.
Over 3 months, I read through all the Kaplan MCAT topic books and annotated them.
Any topics I did not understand well, I used Khan Academy to learn.
Then 6 weeks prior to MCAT, I worked one day per week and spend the rest of week on practice questions and took one full length practice exam per week.

JOI ALMOST QUIT 🤬🤯⬇️
Three months ago I almost walked away from medicine.
Not because I stopped caring… but because I was afraid of something that has haunted me since high school: doing everything in my power and still not getting where I wanted.
When my MCAT score came back nowhere near where I hoped, that fear came rushing back.
So I quit.
Nobody knew.
I kept posting premed content, but behind the scenes I had joined a sales team and convinced myself I was done with medicine.
But something didn’t feel right. There was this pull in my heart asking: what are you doing?
Because the experiences I’ve had on this path don’t feel random. Too many moments to call it coincidence.
So I came back.
These past four months have been some of the hardest months of my life… but also the most transforming.
And now I’m sitting here with my dream MCAT practice score 📈, stronger relationships 🤝, and a deeper sense of purpose.
Not because everything went perfectly.
But because when I quit… I decided to rise again.
If you’re a premed reading this and feeling behind, remember this:

There are always failures behind the wins.
Just make sure the dream you’re chasing is actually yours.
