Happy New Year! A home, a place of business, and the location from which President Johnson often ran the country from 1963-1969, the Texas White House has left an enormous impact on the nation and the world. Today, the Texas White House Complex on the LBJ Ranch is being closed to the public in order to begin our much needed rehabilitation project there. As we look forward to preserving the structures at the complex for future generations, we're taking a moment to reflect on the changes the building has seen in the past. In the first episode of our new series "Heart's Homeland," see Ranger Douglas describe how the Texas White House became the structure we know today. Hint: This isn't the first time the building has needed extensive repairs! Don't forget that much of the LBJ Ranch is still accessible including the Junction School, Reconstructed Birthplace, Showbarn, and more! The Economic Opportunity Act created Head Start, VISTA, Job Corps, and Community Action Programs that gave poor communities—especially Black Americans—unprecedented power to challenge inequality. Poverty dropped from 20% to 11% by 1973. But Vietnam drained the funding. Dr. King said it was "shot down on the battlefields." By the late '70s, the program was dismantled. Federalizing our Guard without state approval is illegal and immoral. The last time a president bypassed a governor to deploy the military on its own soil was in March 1965–when President Johnson deployed Guard troops to protect demonstrators from racist violence at the momentous civil rights march in Selma, Alabama. The Legislature is urging the Ninth Court to reconsider. March 31, 1968: President Lyndon Johnson announced that he would not seek reelection, surprising the nation and many of his own staff. “With America’s sons in the fields far away, with America’s future under challenge right here at home, with our hopes and the world’s hopes for peace in the balance every day, I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes or to any duties other than the awesome duties of this office — the Presidency of your country,” he said. “Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President.” Before President Biden’s announcement Sunday, President Johnson was the most recent incumbent president with eligibility remaining not to seek reelection. President Johnson’s approval ratings declined amid public frustration with both the Vietnam War and domestic unrest. Take the time to read it today… ⤵️ President Lyndon Johnson's 10-Point Formula for Success: 1️⃣ Learn to remember names. Inefficiency at this point may indicate that your interest is not sufficiently outgoing. 2️⃣ Be a comfortable person so there is no strain in being with you. Be an old-shoe, old-hat kind of individual. 3️⃣ Acquire the quality of relaxed, easy-going so that things do not ruffle you. 4️⃣ Don't be egotistical. Guard against the impression that you know it all. 5️⃣ Cultivate the quality of being interesting so people will get something of value from their association with you. 6️⃣ Study to get the "scratchy" elements out of your personality, even those of which you may be unconscious. 7️⃣ Sincerely attempt to heal, on an honest Christian basis, every misunderstanding you have had or now have.
